The air permeability specific surface of a powder material is a single-parameter measurement of the fineness of the powder. The specific surface is derived from the resistance to flow of air (or some other gas) through a porous bed of the powder. The SI units are m2·kg−1 ("mass specific surface") or m2·m−3 ("volume specific surface"). Significance The particle size, or fineness, of powder materials is very often critical to their performance. Measurement of air permeability can be performed very rapidly, and does not require the powder to be exposed to vacuum or to gases or vapours, as is necessary for the BET method for determination of specific surface area. This makes it both very cost-effective, and also allows it to be used for materials which may be unstable under vacuum. Blaine Island
Blaine Island is an island on the Kanawha River in the city of South Charleston, West Virginia. It is roughly in area with a length of 1.25 miles and about 900 feet at its widest point. Blaine Island serves as the South Charleston Manufacturing Site for the Union Carbide Corporation, a subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Company. Union Carbide purchased Blaine Island in 1927 in order to expand their petrochemical manufacturing operations in South Charleston. The company previously had petrochemical plants in South Charleston in 1925 and Clendenin in 1920, which holds the distinction as the world's first petrochemical plant. For this reason, locals occasionally refer to the island as "Carbide Island". Blaine Island is named for a man of the surname of Blaine who erected a mill there before 1823. Blaine is a town in Burnett County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 197 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated communities of Riverside and Woodland Corner are located in the town. Geography Blaine occupies the northern end of Burnett County. It is bordered to the east by Washburn County and to the north by Douglas County, both in Wisconsin, and to the west by Pine County, Minnesota.
