Blacklick Creek (Pennsylvania)
Blacklick Creek is a tributary of the Conemaugh River, approximately 30 mi (48 km) long, in western Pennsylvania in the United States. It rises in two forks in western Cambria County, on the western side of the Allegheny Mountains. The North Branch, approximately 12 mi (19 km) long, rises north of Colver and flows west, then southwest. The South Branch rises near Revloc and flows west. The branches meet at Rexis, near the boundary between Cambria and Indiana counties. The main branch flows west, receiving Two Lick Creek near Josephine, approximately 10 mi (16 km) SSW of Indiana, then WSW to join the Conemaugh approximately 3 mi (5 km) WNW of Blairsville. The name, which is also the name of the township that contains most of the northern branch and part of the southern branch, probably refers to the fact that the stream (or "lick") often passes over outcroppings of coal ("black" minerals) in its bed and its banks. Blacklick Township is a township in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,880 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Blacklick Township is located in western Cambria County at 40.613171,-78.787422. It is bordered to the west by Indiana County. The South Branch of Blacklick Creek forms the majority of the southern border of the township, and the North Branch of Blacklick Creek flows through the western part of the township. The boroughs of Nanty-Glo and Vintondale border the township on the south. Ebensburg, the Cambria County seat, is to the east, and the city of Johnstown is to the south. Blairsville is a borough in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, United States, located east of Pittsburgh, and on the Conemaugh River. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 3,252. History Blairsville was settled in 1818 and incorporated in 1825. In the past, railway shops, foundries, machine shops, enameling plants, and manufactories of plate glass and lumber employed the residents. It was the seat of Blairsville College, a Presbyterian institution opened in 1851. Just outside of the city limits in Burrell Township, auto and diesel repair trade school New Village Institute has operated since 2021. The Blairsville Armory and St. Peter's Episcopal Church and Rectory are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Conemaugh River is a long tributary of the Kiskiminetas River in Westmoreland, Indiana, and Cambria counties in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The name means 'Otter Creek', originating from the Unami-Lenape language word ''kwənəmuxkw'' 'otter'. Course The Conemaugh River is formed at Johnstown (site of the Johnstown Flood) in southwestern Cambria County by the confluence of the Little Conemaugh and Stonycreek rivers. It flows generally west–northwest, in a winding course through the mountains along the northern edge of Laurel Hill and Chestnut Ridge. Northwest of Blairsville it is joined by Blacklick Creek.
