''Black Horse Canyon'' is a 1954 American Western film directed by Jesse Hibbs and written by Daniel Mainwaring and David Lang. It is based on the 1950 novel ''The Wild Horse'' by Les Savage Jr.. The film stars Joel McCrea, Mari Blanchard, Race Gentry, Murvyn Vye, Irving Bacon and John Pickard. The film was released in June 1954, by Universal Pictures. Jesse John Hibbs (January 11, 1906 – February 4, 1985) was an American film director, film and television director and American football player. He played college football at the University of Southern California (USC), where he was an All-American Tackle (American football), tackle for the USC Trojans football, Trojans in 1927 and 1928. Football career Born in Normal, Illinois, Hibbs graduated from the select Lake Forest Academy and subsequently enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC), where he was the captain (sports), captain of USC's first College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS, national championship team, in 1928. Ewing Young Mitchell (December 29, 1910 – September 3, 1988) was an American character actor of film and television best known for his role as Sheriff Mitch Hargrove in 26 episodes between 1956 and 1959 of the aviation adventure series with a western theme, ''Sky King''. He also played Sheriff Powers on another western series, ''The Adventures of Champion''. Early years Mitchell was born in Charleston, South Carolina. His Episcopal minister father headed Porter Military Academy before he was appointed Episcopal Bishop of Arizona, which took the family to that state. In 1938, Mitchell left Arizona to study singing in Hollywood. He attended Hampden–Sydney College and Sewanee: The University of the South. He appeared and sang baritone on Broadway during the 1930s. Daniel Mainwaring (February 27, 1902 – January 31, 1977) was an American novelist and screenwriter. Biography A native of Oakland, California, Mainwaring began his professional career as a journalist for the ''San Francisco Chronicle'' and enjoyed a successful career as a mystery novelist (under the name Geoffrey Homes). He worked as a film publicist and eventually abandoned fiction for a successful career as a screenwriter. His first novel (and the only one he ever published under his own name), ''One Against the Earth'' (1932), is a proletarian novel about a young man born on a California ranch who becomes a drifter and is eventually unjustly accused of attacking a child.. John Pickard (American Actor)
John M. Pickard (June 25, 1913 – August 4, 1993) was an American actor who appeared primarily in television westerns. Early life Pickard was born in Lascassas in Rutherford County, near Murfreesboro in Middle Tennessee. He graduated from the Nashville Conservatory in Nashville, Tennessee. His first acting roles were small parts in films, mostly uncredited, beginning in 1936 as a dueling soldier in the picture '' Mary of Scotland'', based on the 16th century queen, Mary of Scotland. From 1942 to 1946, Pickard served in the United States Navy, having been the model for naval recruitment posters during World War II. Career Pickard returned to acting after the war and appeared in supporting roles in scores of westerns and action dramas before landing the starring role in the syndicated television series, '' Boots and Saddles'', set on an Arizona fort in the late 19th century.
