Black Hills Cemetery Act
The Black Hills Cemetery Act (; ) is a United States public law that was introduced into the United States House of Representatives of the 113th United States Congress on January 15, 2013 by Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD). The bill would transfer ownership of nine cemeteries (and some surrounding land) located in South Dakota from the ownership of the U.S. government to the ownership of the local communities that have been caring for and maintaining those cemeteries. The bill was signed into law on July 25, 2014. Background There are nine specific cemeteries listed in the bill that are currently cared for by local community groups. The bill is designed to transfer ownership of the cemetery land to those groups. The House of Representatives in the 112th United States Congress passed , which was identical legislation, that failed to become law. Kristi Noem
Kristi Lynn Noem (; née Arnold; born November 30, 1971) is an American politician serving as the 33rd governor of South Dakota since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, she was the U.S. representative for from 2011 to 2019 and a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives for the 6th district from 2007 to 2011. Noem was elected governor in 2018 and is South Dakota's first female governor. During the 2018 election, she was endorsed by then-president Donald Trump. Early life and education Kristi Noem was born to Ron and Corinne Arnold in Watertown, South Dakota, and was raised with her siblings on their family ranch and farm in rural Hamlin County.
