"Black Balloon" is the fifth and final single by indie rock duo The Kills from their third studio album, ''Midnight Boom'' (2008). It was released on March 22, 2009 through the independent label Domino Recording Company, Domino. The single features two acoustic B-sides, "Weedkiller", and a cover of the blues standard "Forty-Four (song), Forty Four", originally written by Roosevelt Sykes. "Black Balloon" is a "relatively docile" song, using the black balloon as a metaphor to "signify loss and the need to move on." A music video for the song was directed by Kenneth Capello. In February 2011, "Black Balloon" was featured in an episode of the American TV series, ''The Good Wife''. In 2014, "Black Balloon" was also featured in the movie "Asthma (film)". The Kills
The Kills are an English-American rock duo formed by American singer Alison "VV" Mosshart and English guitarist Jamie "Hotel" Hince. They are signed to Domino Records. Their first four albums, '' Keep On Your Mean Side'', ''No Wow'', ''Midnight Boom'', and ''Blood Pressures'', all reached the UK album chart. Their fifth and most recent studio album, ''Ash & Ice'', was released in 2016 and reached the UK Top 20 album chart. ''Midnight Boom'' is the third album by indie rock band The Kills, released on March 10, 2008, through Domino Records (March 17, 2008, in the United States). It was recorded at the Key Club Recording Company in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The title refers to the hours from midnight to 6 a.m., in which the band was at the creative peak, writing material for the album. Promotion "U.R.A. Fever" was released as the lead single from the album on December 3, 2007. The second single, "Cheap and Cheerful", was released on February 25, 2008. "Last Day of Magic" was released as the third single on June 15, 2008 Two final singles from the album were " Tape Song", released on November 16, 2008, and " Black Balloon", released on March 22, 2009. Forty-Four (song)
"Forty-Four" or "44 Blues" is a blues standard whose origins have been traced back to early 1920s Louisiana. However, it was Roosevelt Sykes, who provided the lyrics and first recorded it in 1929, that helped popularize the song. "Forty-Four," through numerous adaptations and recordings, remains in the blues lexicon eighty years later. Origins "Four-Four" was developed from an earlier piano-based blues theme titled "The Forty-Fours". Little Brother Montgomery, who is usually credited with early performances of the song, described it as a "barrelhouse, honky-tonk blues" without any lyrics. He taught it to another blues pianist, Lee Green, who taught it to Roosevelt Sykes. Sykes explained: Sykes added lyrics to the tune and recorded it as "44 Blues" on June 14, 1929, for Okeh Records. Roosevelt Sykes (January 31, 1906July 17, 1983) was an American blues musician, also known as "the Honeydripper". Career Sykes was born the son of a musician in Elmar, Arkansas. "Just a little old sawmill town", Sykes said of his birthplace. The Sykes family was living in St. Louis by 1909. Sykes often visited his grandfather's farm near West Helena.
