Anna Pierce Hobbs Bixby
Anna Pierce Hobbs Bixby, sometimes spelled Bigsby, born Anna Pierce ( – c. 1870), was a midwife, frontier doctor, dentist, herbologist, and scientist in southern Illinois. Bixby discovered that white snakeroot (''Ageratina altissima'') contains a toxin. When cattle consume the plant, their meat and milk become contaminated and cause the sometimes fatal condition milk sickness. One of the most notable and tragic cases of the "milk sickness" was that of Nancy Hanks Lincoln, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, who died at 34 years old in 1818. Early life Bixby was the daughter of farmers, who had moved from Philadelphia and in 1828 settled in southeastern Illinois, close to what would become the village of Rock Creek. After finishing school, she traveled to Philadelphia to train in midwifery and dentistry, but on her return to Illinois she became the first physician in Hardin County and consequently, a general practitioner for her community. Maynard Bixby
Maynard Bixby (June 28, 1853 – February 18, 1935) was an American mineralogist and mineral collector. Early life Bixby was born in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania and graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania in 1876. He worked for a time in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, where he was a bookkeeper and studied law. He then decided to travel the country and became involved in mining in Colorado and Arizona. Career Bixby explored the Thomas Range in Juab County, Utah for minerals and staked several claims for topaz. One, the Maynard's Claim, is still being mined for specimens. The mineral bixbyite, which he discovered there, was named in his honor in 1897. The rare, red beryl also found there, originally named ''bixbite'' in his honor, was later renamed "red beryl" to avoid confusion with bixbyite. Bixby wrote articles for ''The Mineral Collector.'' Tams Bixby
Tams Bixby (1855-1922) was best known for his work on the Dawes Commission, which was formed to formally enroll members of the Indian tribes that were to be allotted portions of the tribal lands in what would become Oklahoma, and prepare for the abolition of the tribal governments before the territories could be accepted as a state. Named as a commission member in 1893, he was elevated to chairman after Senator Dawes' death in 1903. In that position, he was the official custodian of over two million of acres of land whose ownership was being transferred from the tribes to individual members. The organization he led numbered at least 500 people and occupied a large special-purpose building erected in downtown Muskogee. Decades later, a Muskogee reporter wrote that he was, "... arguably the most important figure in Indian Territory." Sarah Bixby Smith (1871–1935) was a California writer and an advocate of women's education. ''Adobe Days'', her memoir of growing up in southern California, is considered a classic of the genre. Family and education Sarah Hathaway Bixby was born at Rancho San Justo near San Juan Bautista, California, in 1871. Her parents were Llewellyn Bixby, a rancher, and Mary Hathaway Bixby. Llewellyn Bixby was a sheepman, and with other members of the Bixby family had come to California in 1852, driving sheep and cattle from the East. Llewellyn, together with his brother Jotham and three cousins (John William Bixby, Thomas Flint, and Benjamin Flint), formed the Flint-Bixby Company in 1855 to buy land to run their livestock.
