(; german: link=no, Bistritz, archaic , Transylvanian Saxon: , hu, Beszterce) is the capital city of Bistrița-Năsăud County, in northern Transylvania, Romania. It is situated on the Bistrița River. The city has a population of approximately 70,000 inhabitants and administers six villages: (; ), (; ), (; ), (; ), (until 1950 ; ; ) and (; ). Etymology The town was named after the River, whose name comes from the Slavic word meaning 'fast-moving water'. History The earliest sign of settlement in the area of is in Neolithic remains. The Turkic Pechenegs settled the area in 12th century following attacks of the Cumans. Transylvanian Saxons settled the area in 1206 and called the region . A large part of settlers were fugitives, convicts, and poor people looking for lands and opportunities. Bystřice nad Pernštejnem (; german: Bistritz ob Pernstein) is a town in Žďár nad Sázavou District in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 7,800 inhabitants. Etymology The name Bystřice is derived from ''bystřina'', which is a term for a steep, fast flowing stream. The local watercourse was originally called Říčka (i.e. "small river") and later renamed after the town. In 1881, ''nad Pernštýnem'' was added to the name to distinguish from other places with the same name, and in 1825 it was modified to ''nad Pernštejnem''. It refers to the nearby Pernštejn Castle. Bystřice pod Hostýnem (; german: Bistritz am Hostein) is a town in Kroměříž District in the Zlín Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 8,000 inhabitants. Administrative parts Villages of Bílavsko, Hlinsko pod Hostýnem, Rychlov and Sovadina are administrative parts of Bystřice pod Hostýnem. Geography Bystřice pod Hostýnem is located about northeast of Kroměříž and north of Zlín. It lies in the Moravian-Silesian Foothills. The Bystřička stream flows through the town. Hostýn hill, whose name is included in the name of the town, is located south of the town outside of the municipal territory, but a contour line below the hill at above sea level is the highest point of Bystřice pod Hostýnem. ( pl, , german: Bistrzitz) is a municipality and village in Frýdek-Místek District in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 5,300 inhabitants and it is the most populated municipality in the country without the town status. Polish minority makes up 21.3% of the population. Etymology The name is derived from the Slavic word '' bystry, bystrý'', i.e. "fast, rapid" (flow of a river or stream). Geography Bystřice lies in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia. The Hluchová Creek flows to the Olza River in the municipality. The southwestern part of the municipality lies in the Jablunkov Furrow and the southeastern part in the Silesian Beskids.
