The Bishop of Bolton is an episcopal title used by a suffragan bishop of the Church of England Diocese of Manchester, in the province of York, England. The title takes its name after the town of Bolton in Greater Manchester; the See was erected under the Suffragans Nomination Act 1888, by Order in Council dated 8 February 1984. On 22 June 2016, it was announced that Mark Ashcroft, Archdeacon of Manchester, has been appointed the next Bishop of Bolton following his consecration, which duly occurred on 18 October 2016. Chris Edmondson
Christopher Paul Edmondson (born 25 June 1950) is a British Anglican retired bishop. He was the Bishop of Bolton, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Manchester, from 2008 to 2016. He is presently an Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Leeds. Early life and education Edmondson was born on 25 June 1950. He was educated at St John's College, Durham University. Ordained ministry Edmondson was ordained in 1974 and began his ecclesiastical career with a curacy at Kirkheaton. From 1979 until 1986 he was Vicar of Ovenden, and also in the latter part of his Incumbency the Bishop of Wakefield's adviser on Evangelism. After further pastoral posts he became Warden of Lee Abbey, Lynton, Devon, in 2002. This lead in turn to elevation to the suffragan bishopric of Bolton on the retirement of David Gillett. David Gillett
David Keith Gillett (born 25 January 1945) is a British Anglican bishop. From 1988 to 1999, he was Principal of Trinity College, Bristol, an Anglican theological college. From 1999 to 2008, he was the Bishop of Bolton, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Manchester. Since 2008, he has been an honorary assistant bishop and Diocesan Interfaith Adviser in the Diocese of Norwich. Early life Gillett was educated at Wellingborough Grammar School in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. He studied for a BA and an MPhil at Leeds University. From 1966 to 1968, he undertook study and training for ordination at Oak Hill College, an evangelical theological college in London. David Bonser
David Bonser (1 February 1934 – 20 March 2005) was the Anglican Bishop of Bolton from 1991 until 1999. Educated at King's College London Bonser studied for ordination at St Boniface Missionary College, Warminster. He became an Associate of King's College (AKC) in 1961 and later obtained an MA from the University of Manchester (1975). He embarked upon curacies in Heckmondwike and Sheffield. From 1968 until 1972 he was Rector of St Clement's, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, and latterly an Honorary Canon of Manchester Cathedral. For nine years after that he was Archdeacon of Rochdale before elevation to the suffragan bishopric of Bolton Bolton (, locally ) is a large town in Greater Manchester in North West England, formerly a part of Lancashire. David Galliford
David George Galliford (20 June 1925 – 13 October 2021) was an English Anglican Suffragan Bishop who served in two sees in Manchester diocese between 1975 and 1991. Church career Educated at Bede College and Clare College, Cambridge Galliford studied for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge before embarking on an ecclesiastical career with a curacy at St John Newland, Hull. A Minor Canon at St George's, Windsor, from 1954 until 1956, he subsequently served as Vicar of Newton under Roseberry and Rector of Bolton Percy. From 1970 he was Canon Residentiary and Treasurer of York Minster. After Kenneth Ramsey's retirement on 30 June 1975, Galliford was consecrated a bishop before his installation as Bishop of Hulme at Manchester Cathedral not long before 7 November. Mark David Ashcroft (born 3 September 1954) is a British Anglican bishop. Since 2016, he has been the Bishop of Bolton. He had previously been Archdeacon of Manchester from 2009 to 2016. Apart from ten years working in Kenya, he has spent all his ordained ministry in the Diocese of Manchester, Church of England. A suffragan bishop is a type of bishop in some Christian denominations. In the Anglican Communion, a suffragan bishop is a bishop who is subordinate to a metropolitan bishop or diocesan bishop (bishop ordinary) and so is not normally jurisdictional in their role. Suffragan bishops may be charged by a metropolitan to oversee a suffragan diocese and may be assigned to areas which do not have a cathedral of their own. In the Catholic Church, a suffragan bishop instead leads a diocese within an ecclesiastical province other than the principal diocese, the metropolitan archdiocese; the diocese led by the suffragan is called a suffragan diocese.
