Bishop Brookes House
The Bishop Brookes House is a historic house at 407 North 6th Street in De Queen, Arkansas. It is a -story brick structure, built between 1922 and 1928 by Bishop Brookes, Sr., the proprietor of the locally prominent Brookes Drug Store. The house is an excellent local example of Colonial Revival architecture, with a symmetrical facade, and a center entry with portico supported by Corinthian columns. The house remained in the Brookes family until 1995. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. De Queen ( ) is a city and the county seat of Sevier County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 6,629 at the 2010 census. The placename is the anglicization of the family name of the Dutch merchant and railway financier, Jan de Goeijen (1861–1944). De Goeijen was reportedly rather unhappy with the deformation of his name. Geography De Queen is located at (34.039994, −94.341964). The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built c. 1880–1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States.
