Birtle, Greater Manchester
Birtle is a hamlet within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies in the Cheesden Valley, set amongst the Pennines. Historically a part of Lancashire, Birtle is archaically referred to as Bircle or Birkle which means Birch Hill. Together with neighbouring Bamford, it formed the civil parish of Birtle-with-Bamford (also known as Birtle-cum-Bamford). It was in Middleton ecclesiastical parish and in Bury poor law Union. In 1933, Birtle-with-Bamford was dissolved with Birtle being amalgamated into the Municipal Borough of Heywood. Birtle Indian Residential School
The Birtle Indian Residential School was a school within the Canadian Indian residential school system that operated in Birtle, Manitoba from 1888 to 1970. Operated by the Presbyterian Church in Canada, attendance during the school's operation ranged from 19 to 170 students. School conditions An analysis of the school's water in 1941 indicated high levels of colon bacilli, an indication of fecal contamination, leading to the discovery that the school's chlorination system had stopped working. In 1950 an equipment leak led to the shut down of the school's hot-water supply resulting in students having to carry buckets of boiling water from the basement's boiler to bathtubs in order to bathe. Water quality was again identified as an issue at the school as part of a federal report that rated the quality of the water from the kitchen tap as "dangerous". Birtle, Manitoba
Birtle is an unincorporated urban community in the Prairie View Municipality within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to 1 January 2015. It is located at the junction of Highways 83 and 42. History Originally incorporated in 1884, the community lies in the Birdtail River valley. It features a spacious community park developed in the early years of the community with additions through the years to bring it to the current time where the original golf course designed to take advantage of the valley contours now enjoys the modern amenities and the tennis courts still located in the original location now feature modern plexipave surfaces and are some of the best in western Manitoba. Another attraction is the Birdtail Country Museum, housed in an historic stone building on Main Street. The building was built in the early 1900s to be used as the Union Bank.
