''Birth and the Burial'' is the debut studio album by American heavy metal supergroup Act of Defiance. It was released on August 21, 2015, through Metal Blade Records. A music video for the song "Throwback" was released on June 24, 2015, with another for "Legion of Lies" following on August 6, 2015. Reception ''Birth and the Burial'' has received positive reaction from critics. ''Rock Hard'' magazine gave the album a score of nine out of ten, calling it an "engaging thrash metal album ..One of the best releases of 2015!" A supergroup is a musical group whose members are successful as solo artists or as members of other successful groups. The term became popular in the late 1960s when members of already successful rock groups recorded albums together, after which they normally disband. Matt Bachand (born April 29, 1977) is an American guitarist. He has strong death metal and thrash metal influences. He is rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist for the heavy metal band Shadows Fall, and the bassist for Act of Defiance. He is known for his deep growls or death growl, which is often heard in death metal genre. In Shadows Fall, he can also be heard using a clean vocal style, such as in the song "What Drives the Weak." In his earlier days around the early through the mid-1990s, he was a guitarist for the death metal band Exhumed (not the deathgrind band Exhumed) and briefly was part of another death metal band, Perpetual Doom. Shawn Drover (born May 5, 1966) is a Canadian drummer, best known for his work with the American heavy metal band Megadeth. He began playing the drums at the age of 13. In 1993 he founded the power metal band Eidolon with his brother Glen. He uses Sabian cymbals and Yamaha drums, Pro-mark drum sticks, Toca Percussion, Evans Drumheads and Extreme Isolation headphones. Christopher Alan Broderick (born March 6, 1970) is an American musician, best known as a former guitarist of the heavy metal band Megadeth. He is also formerly the lead guitarist and keyboardist for Jag Panzer, appearing on four of Jag Panzer's albums '' The Age of Mastery'', ''Thane to the Throne'' (a concept album about Shakespeare's ''Macbeth''), ''Mechanized Warfare'' and '' Casting the Stones'' before moving on to Megadeth, replacing Glen Drover. Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States.
