Ayalew Birru, or Ayyalaw Birru, (1892 - May 1945) was an Ethiopian army commander, a patriot, and a cousin of Emperor Haile Selassie I. Biography Ayalew Birru was born at Gayent and was the son of ''Ras'' Birru Wolde Gabriel and ''Woizero'' Gessesse Marso. Ayalew Birru was a relative of Taytu Betul. From 1883 to 1913, Taytu was the wife of Emperor Menelek II , spoken = ; ''djānhoi'', lit. ''"O steemedroyal"'' , alternative = ; ''getochu'', lit. ''"Our master"'' (pl.) Dejazmach Birru
''Dejazmach'' Birru Aligaz was a nobleman of 19th century Ethiopia during the Zemene Mesafint. As ''Dejazmach'', he held the governorships of different districts such as Lasta and Dembiya and was made governor of Dawunt, Wollo in 1842 by ''Ras'' Ali II of Yejju. He was the son of Ras Aligaz Abba Seru Gwangul, and had a son called Dejazmach Zegeye. In late 1841, ''Dejazmach'' Wube Haile Maryam, governor of Tigray and Semien, who was regarded as one of the most powerful lords of the time, set out to Debre Tabor to depose ''Ras'' Ali II from his position as Enderase. ''Ras'' Ali II escaped after being defeated, but the victors, who were celebrating their victory fully believing that their enemy was defeated, were surprised by ''Dejazmach'' Birru Aligaz, who was ''Ras'' Ali's uncle. Tadesse Birru
Tadesse Birru (1921 – 19 March 1975) was an Ethiopian general of the Imperial Ethiopian Army and civil rights activist. Initially a strong proponent of Ethiopian unity, Tadesse eventually became an activist for the empowerment of the Oromo people in the 1960s. His advocacy turned into repeated attempts to overthrow the government through a coup and later through a military rebellion. He was eventually captured and executed by the Derg regime. He is considered to be the father of modern Oromo nationalism. Life and career Early life Tadesse was born in Salele, in the Shewa province of the Ethiopian Empire during Emperor Haile Selassie's reign. His father, Birru, was killed by poison gas during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and his mother died of grief three months later. Tadesse is of Tulama Oromo descent.
