Birmingham Phoenix are a franchise 100-ball cricket side based in the city of Birmingham. The team represents the historic counties of Warwickshire and Worcestershire in the newly founded The Hundred competition, which began its inaugural season on 21 July 2021, during the English and Welsh cricket season. Both the men's and women's sides play at Edgbaston. History The announcement of the new eight-team men's and women's tournament series in 2019 was not without controversy, with the likes of Virat Kohli criticising the England and Wales Cricket Board for pursuing a shift away from Test cricket, while others argued the format should have followed the established and successful Twenty20 format. The historic counties of England are areas that were established for administration by the Normans, in many cases based on earlier Heptarchy, kingdoms and shires created by the Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Celts and others. Patrick Rhys Brown (born 23 August 1998) is an English cricketer who plays for Worcestershire. He made his international debut for England in November 2019. Worcestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Worcestershire. Amy Ellen Jones is an English cricketer who plays as a wicket-keeper and right-handed batter for Warwickshire, Central Sparks, Birmingham Phoenix and England. Alexander Peter Richard Gidman (born 22 June 1981) is an English cricket coach and former cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who played for Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. Playing career Gidman went to Wycliffe College in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, where he became a talented cricketer playing for the first XI. Jamie Oliver Troughton (born 2 March 1979) is an English cricket coach and former cricketer. He is currently Assistant Coach at Surrey, and as a player was mainly an attack-minded left-handed batsman and an occasional slow left-arm orthodox bowler. He played for (and captained) Warwickshire. Andrew Barry McDonald (born 5 June 1981) is the head Australian cricket coach and former cricketer who played for the Victoria and South Australia cricket teams. He was born in Wodonga, Victoria and currently lives in Geelong, Victoria. He made his Test match debut in Sydney on 3 January 2009, against South Africa. Twenty20 (T20) is a shortened game format of cricket. At the professional level, it was introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003 for the inter-county competition. In a Twenty20 game, the two teams have a single innings each, which is restricted to a maximum of 20 overs. Together with first-class and List A cricket, Twenty20 is one of the three current forms of cricket recognised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as being at the highest international or domestic level.
