Biri is a village in Gjøvik Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. The village is located along the western shore of the lake Mjøsa, about north of the town of Gjøvik. The Norwegian National Road 4 highway runs through the village which is near the Mjøsa Bridge about halfway between the towns of Lillehammer and Gjøvik. The village has a population (2021) of 1,495 and a population density of . History The village of Biri was the administrative centre of the old Biri Municipality which existed from 1838 until 1964 when it was merged into Gjøvik Municipality. The Norwegian Trotting Association ( no, Det Norske Travselskap, DNT) is the sports federation organizing horse racing in Norway. It is an umbrella for the 13 regional federations and 185 local chapters with 17,000 members. Tote betting takes place at eleven harness race courses and one gallop races course, Øvrevoll Galoppbane, all owned by the association. The betting is organized through the association-owned company Norsk Rikstoto. In 2009 the association organized 556 race days, with 4,652 races taking place in 2008. The Tote is a British gambling company which is the largest pool betting operator in the United Kingdom. Headquartered in Wigan, England, its main products are sports betting and online casino. Founded in 1928, the company was owned by the UK Government until July 2011 when it was sold to Betfred for £265m. It was later sold to UK Tote Group in October 2019 for £115m. The Norsk Rikstoto (lit. 'Norwegian National Tote') is a foundation that supervises parimutuel betting on animal racing in Norway. It was established on 24 September 1982 by the Norwegian Trotting Association and the Norwegian Jockey Club to run a tote board, totalizator game named V6. Norsk Tipping administered most such games until 1993, when Norsk Rikstoto took over. In 1996 the foundation received responsibility, financial and administrative, for all such games. It also runs the television channel Rikstoto Direkte. Animal racing in Norway is limited to Horse racing, equine racing; there are eleven tracks for harness racing and one track, Øvrevoll Galoppbane, for Horse gait#Gallop, gallop.
