Birds Of Tokyo (album)
''Birds of Tokyo'' is the third album by Australian alternative rock band Birds of Tokyo, released on 23 July 2010 through EMI Records. It was recorded in Sydney, Australia; New York City; London; and Gothenburg, Sweden, produced by Scott Horscroft, co-produced by Adam Spark and mixed by Michael Brauer. This is the last album to feature Anthony Jackson on bass guitar before his departure in March 2011. At the J Awards of 2010, the album was nominated for Australian Album of the Year. The album won the ARIA Award for Best Rock Album in 2010. History In early 2010 the band returned to the studio to commence work on their third album. March 2010 saw the release of "The Saddest Thing I Know" and the announcement of an Australian tour by the same name, supported by New Zealand-based band Midnight Youth. Birds Of Tokyo
Birds of Tokyo are an Australian alternative rock band from Perth, Western Australia. Their debut album, ''Day One,'' gained them domestic success, reaching number three on the AIR Independent Album charts and spending a total of 36 consecutive weeks in the top ten. In 2008, the band released ''Universes'', which made it to number three on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart. 2010 saw the band's self-titled third studio release '' Birds of Tokyo'' spend over eight months on the Australian top 20, peaking at number two on the ARIA Albums Chart. The double platinum album received the 2010 ARIA Award for Best Rock Album and in early 2011 the band's breakthrough hit " Plans" ranked number four on Triple J's Hottest 100. Michael Brauer
Michael Brauer is a New York-based mix engineer. He received a Grammy for "Best Pop Vocal Album" for his work on John Mayer's '' Continuum'', "Best Alternative Album" for Coldplay's ''Parachutes'', and also "Best Rock Album" for Coldplay's ''Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends''. He has worked with artists such as Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Prefab Sprout, Deacon Blue, James Brown, Aerosmith, Jeff Buckley, David Byrne, Tony Bennett, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Ben Folds, Pet Shop Boys, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, KT Tunstall, and Martha Wainwright. Brauer is known for an unusual implementation of multi-bus compression, referred to as 'Brauerizing', in which various instrumental sections of a mix are sent to different compressors in an ABCD implementation, while vocals are usually sent to separate compressors in parallel. Bob Ludwig
Robert C. Ludwig (born c. 1945) is an American mastering engineer. He has mastered recordings on all the major recording formats for all the major record labels, and on projects by more than 1,300 artists including Led Zeppelin, Lou Reed, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Bryan Ferry, Paul McCartney, Nirvana, Bruce Springsteen and Daft Punk resulting in over 3,000 credits. He is the recipient of numerous Grammy and TEC Awards. Biography At the age of eight in South Salem, New York, Ludwig was so fascinated with his first tape recorder, that he used to make recordings of whatever was on the radio. Ludwig is a classical musician by training, having obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester in New York. Jean-Paul Fung
Jean-Paul Fung (born 6 November 1988) is an Australian producer, mixer, musician and songwriter who has worked on multiple award-winning records. Fung learned how to play the piano, guitar, bass guitar and drums at a young age. Throughout his teenage years he played in punk rock, hardcore and folk music bands. In November 2009, at the now-defunct BJB Studios, Fung was hired as in-house assistant by Australian producer Scott Horscroft. He was later promoted to in-house audio engineer, shortly followed by in-house producer. Following the closure of BJB Studios in September 2011, Fung moved to freelance work. Triple J (stylised in all lowercase) is a government-funded, national Australian radio station intended to appeal to listeners of alternative music, which began broadcasting in January 1975. The station also places a greater emphasis on broadcasting Australian content compared to commercial stations. Triple J is a division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Richard Kingsmill
Richard Kingsmill (born 29 January 1954) is an Australian radio announcer, music journalist and currently Group Music Director of triple j, triple j Unearthed, Double J and ABC Local Radio. Career His career at triple j started in 1988 as a producer for station presenters George Wayne, Tracee Hutchison and Tim Ritchie. In 1990, new management at the station forced Kingsmill and many others to re-apply for their jobs. Kingsmill failed to regain his producer position, but landed a presenter position instead. Since then, he has hosted shows that involve an in-depth knowledge of the current state of the alternative music scene, at both a local and international level. These shows have included ''The J-Files'' (1995–2003) and the ''Australian Music Show'' (1993–2003). In 1994, he began hosting triple j's ''New Releases'' show. Midnight Youth
Midnight Youth were a New Zealand rock band formed in 2006. Their debut album, ''The Brave Don't Run'', was released in 2009 in New Zealand and Australia. The band subsequently toured and played festivals across Australasia, the United States and Asia. Their second and last studio album, '' World Comes Calling'', was released in October 2011. They played their last show on 2 March 2013. History Early beginnings Midnight Youth came together while at Rangitoto College in Auckland's North Shore with three members of the band playing together in New Zealand's high school Rockquest competition. ARIA Award For Best Rock Album
The ARIA Music Award for Best Rock Album, is an award presented at the annual ARIA Music Awards, which recognises "the many achievements of Aussie artists across all music genres", since 1987. It is handed out by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), an organisation whose aim is "to advance the interests of the Australian record industry." To be eligible, the recording must be an album in the contemporary rock, modern rock and active rock formats, and cannot be entered in other genre categories.
