Bir Uttom ( bn, বীর উত্তম, lit=Great Valiant Hero) is the second highest award for individual gallantry in Bangladesh after the Bir Sreshtho and the highest gallantry award for a living individual. Since the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, 69 people have been awarded the Bir Uttom. Recipients This award was declared on 15 December 1973. A total of 67 people have been rewarded for their bravery and dedication in the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. Lieutenant G. M. Mushfiqur Rahman Bir Uttam (1966-1989) was posted in 1 Field Artillery Regiment of Bangladesh Army in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. On 8 September 1989, he led a 17 member team of Bangladesh Army soldiers and attacked a terrorist Shanti Bahini camp. Bir Sreshtho
The Bir Sreshtho ( bn, বীরশ্রেষ্ঠ; ), is the highest military award of Bangladesh. It was awarded to seven freedom fighters who showed utmost bravery and died in action for their nation. They are considered martyrs. The other three gallantry awards are named, in decreasing order of importance, Bir Uttom, Bir Bikrom and Bir Protik. All of these awards were introduced immediately after the Liberation War in 1971. Ayez Uddin Ahmed
Ayez Uddin Ahmed was a Bangladeshi freedom fighter. He was awarded Bir Protik for his contribution to the Liberation War of Bangladesh. Career Ahmed joined East Pakistan Rifles in 1951. In 1971 he was appointed in Halisahar, Chittagong. After the declaration of independence of Bangladesh he decided to take part in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. He countered the attack from Pakistani battleship with 3 inch mortar on 26 March 1971. After the fall of Karerhat, freedom fighters changed their place from south part of Shuvopur Bridge to north part of Shuvopur Bridge. Then they decided to attack again. He was injured in a battle against Pakistanis in Shuvopur on 12 May 1971. Ahmed went to India after his injury for medical treatment. He joined battlefield in September. Then he took part in the battle of Utma BOP and other places. Abdul Awal Sarkar
Abdul Awal Sarkar (died 1993) was a freedom fighter of the Bangladesh Liberation War. For his courage in the war of independence, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the title of Bir Protik. Birth and education Abdul Awal Sarkar's ancestral home is in Shadgaon village of Vijayanagar (former Sadar) upazila of Brahmanbaria district. His father's name is Aftab Uddin Sarkar and mother Kalestara Bibi. His wife's name is Halima Khatun Siddique. They have six daughters, two sons. Noorjahan Kakon Bibi Bir Protik ( bn, কাঁকন বিবি, kha, Kaket Hanchiata) was a Bangladeshi freedom fighter and secret agent of the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. She was arrested and brutally tortured by the Pakistan army.
