Binod Kumar Roy
Binod Kumar Roy (26 December 1944 – 20 June 2019) was an Indian Judge and former Chief Justice of three High Courts of India. Career Roy was born in 1944. He studied in Patna College and passed LL.B from Magadh University. He started his career in the Patna High Court as an advocate. Roy was elevated as a Judge of the Patna High Court on 31 October 1988. In April 1994 he was transferred to the Allahabad High Court. Roy became the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on 14 October 2002. He was subsequently moved to the Gauhati High Court and served there as the Chief Justice. High Courts Of India
The high courts of India are the highest courts of appellate jurisdiction in each state and union territory of India. However, a high court exercises its original civil and criminal jurisdiction only if the subordinate courts are not authorized by law to try such matters for lack of pecuniary, territorial jurisdiction. High courts may also enjoy original jurisdiction in certain matters, if so designated specially by the constitution, a state or union law. The work of most high courts primarily consists of appeals from lower courts and writ petitions in terms of Articles 226 and 227 of the constitution.
