Billy Gilbert (silent Film Actor)
Billy Gilbert (born William V. Campbell in Hollywood, California; September 15, 1891—April 29, 1961) was involved in more 150 American films between 1913 and 1936, working as either an actor, extra, or director. This Billy Gilbert should not be confused with the later film actor Billy Gilbert (born William Gilbert Barron), who became well known working for Hal Roach Studios in the 1930s. That "later" Gilbert's acting career in both short subjects and feature films continued into the early 1960s. The Billy Gilbert relevant to this page spent his entire career working almost exclusively in shorts, often uncredited. ''The Tip'' is a 1918 American short comedy film featuring Harold Lloyd. Distributed by the Pathé Exchange, the film was released in US cinemas on January 6. The film was shown in France on March 7, 1919 under the title "Lui et la voyante". In the United States a re-edition was made to the film in 1921. ''The Flirt'' is a 1917 American short comedy film featuring Harold Lloyd. Copies of the film survive in the film archives of the Museum of Modern Art and the British Film Institute. Plot Harold Lloyd plays an incorrigible skirt-chaser who follows a pretty girl from a park to her place of employment as a cashier in a restaurant. He orders a huge meal and then proceeds to get the waiter fired so he can take his place. In a short time Lloyd creates mayhem that annoys both the restaurant's customers and its kitchen staff. Lloyd eventually learns that the cashier is married to the proprietor of the restaurant. He then quickly leaves, sees another pretty girl, and follows her down the street. Harold Clayton Lloyd, Sr. (April 20, 1893 – March 8, 1971) was an American actor, comedian, and stunt performer who appeared in many silent comedy films.Obituary ''Variety'', March 10, 1971, page 55. One of the most influential film comedians of the silent film era, Lloyd made nearly 200 comedy films, both silent and "talkies", between 1914 and 1947. His bespectacled "Glass" character was a resourceful, ambitious go-getter who matched the zeitgeist of the 1920s-era United States. His films frequently contained "thrill sequences" of extended chase scenes and daredevil physical feats.
