Billy Field (Gaelic Footballer)
William Field (born 1952) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer. At club level he played with St Michael's and at inter-county level was a member of the Cork senior football team. Career Field enjoyed his first successes, not as a Gaelic footballer but as a hurling goalkeeper with the Blackrock minor team that won Cork MHC titles in 1968 and 1969. He also played as a schoolboy with Coláiste Chríost Rí and was part of the school team that won a Corn Uí Mhuirí-Hogan Cup double in 1970. He was later a member of the University College Cork team that beat University College Galway to win the Sigerson Cup title in 1972. Field first appeared on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork minor football team in 1970. He later appeared with the under-21 team after making his senior team debut in December 1972. St Michael's GAA (Cork)
St Michael's Gaelic Football Club is a Gaelic football club in Cork City, Ireland. The club was formed in 1951 after a discussion in The Leaping Salmon Public House in Blackrock near Cork. At that time some of the Blackrock hurlers played football with different city teams and it was decided to enter a football team from Blackrock, thus keeping the players together. A formal meeting was held and St Michael's Gaelic Football Club was established. Current Championship grades History St Michael's first match was against Crosshaven, with Jimmy Furlong as captain. The club's first success was in 1956 when St Michael's took their first Cork Junior Football Championship title, and as there was no Intermediate Championship or League the club took the decision to go Senior in 1957. The club failed to win a Senior County Title in 1976, 1977, and 1978, but competed in finals during these years against St Finbarr's and Nemo Rangers, and won two Kelleher Shield Titles. Sigerson Cup
The Sigerson Cup is the trophy for the premier Gaelic football championship among Higher Education institutions (Universities, Colleges and Institutes of Technology) in Ireland. It traditionally begins in mid January and ends in late February. The Sigerson Cup competition is administered by Comhairle Ard Oideachais Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (CLG), the GAA's Higher Education Council. The Trench Cup is the second tier football competition, Corn na Mac Léinn the third tier and Corn Comhairle Ardoideachais the fourth tier. The 1973 All-Ireland Football Championship was the 87th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter county, inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 13 May 1973 and ended on 23 September 1973. Offaly GAA, Offaly were the 1972 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, defending champions but were defeated by Galway GAA, Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. 1978 Cork Senior Football Championship
The 1978 Cork Senior Football Championship was the 90th staging of the Cork Senior Football Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The championship began on 9 April 1978 and ended on 17 September 1978. It was the first championship to use a group stage format followed by a knockout phase. Nemo Rangers entered the championship as the defending champions. On 17 September 1978, Nemo Rangers won the championship following a 1-09 to 1-03 defeat of St Michael's in the final. This was their fifth championship title overall and their second title in succession. It was the first time that two teams had qualified for the final having earlier lost a match. St. Michael's became the first team since Fermoy in 1944 to lose three finals in-a-row. Dinny Allen was the championship's top scorer with 2-36. The 1976 Cork Senior Football Championship was the 88th staging of the Cork Senior Football Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The draw for the opening round fixtures took place on 24 January 1976. Nemo Rangers entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were beaten by St. Finbarr's in the semi-finals. The final was played on 14 November 1976 at the newly-opened Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork, between St. Finbarr's and St. Michael's, in what was their first ever meeting in the final. The Cork Premier Senior Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Bon Secours Cork Premier Senior Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Cork PSFC) is an annual club Gaelic football competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking senior clubs and amalgamated teams in the county of Cork in Ireland, deciding the competition winners through a group and knockout format. The Galway County Boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae na Gaillimhe) or Galway GAA are one of the 32 county boards in Ireland; they are responsible for Gaelic games in County Galway, and for the Galway county teams.
