Billy Duckworth
Bill Duckworth (born 21 February 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the VFL and West Perth in the West Australian Football League. He is best known for winning the 1984 Norm Smith Medal. His brother John also played league football. Duckworth appeared 35 times for the Cardinals (as they were known up to 1982) before being recruited by Essendon. He played as an aggressive defender, often seen at the fullback position. His heroics in the 1984 Grand Final win over Hawthorn earned him best on ground recognition and he won another premiership with the Bombers the following season. Duckworth retired in 1990 and returned to West Perth. Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association then joined seven other clubs in October 1896 to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (later changed to AFL in 1990). Headquartered at the Essendon Recreation Ground, known as Windy Hill, from 1922 to 2013, the club moved to The Hangar in near Tullamarine in late 2013 on land owned the Melbourne Airport. 1989 VFL Season
The 1989 VFL season was the 93rd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition and administrative body in Victoria and, by reason of it featuring clubs from New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia, the ''de facto'' highest level senior competition in Australia. The season featured fourteen clubs, ran from 31 March until 30 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top five clubs. The premiership was won by the Hawthorn Football Club for the eighth time and second time consecutively, after it defeated by six points in the 1989 VFL Grand Final. Representative matches in Australian rules football are matches between representative teams played under the Australian rules, most notably of the colonies and later Australian states and territories that have been held since 1879. For most of the 20th century, the absence of a national club competition in Australia and international matches meant that intercolonial and later interstate matches were regarded with great importance. McClelland Trophy
The McClelland Trophy is an Australian rules football trophy which has been awarded each year since 1951 by the Australian Football League (known prior to 1990 as the Victorian Football League) to the best-performing club in the home-and-away season. Between 1951 and 1990, the Trophy was presented to the club with the highest aggregate points across the three grades of competition - seniors, Reserves and Under-19s - with senior wins carrying a higher value. After the AFL announced that the Under-19s competition would be shut down at the end of the 1991 season, to be replaced with an Under-18s competition independent of the AFL clubs, the Trophy has been presented to the club finishing the AFL home-and-away season on top of the ladder, thus merging the Trophy with the minor premiership.
