Billy Arnold (basketball)
Billy Arnold (born 1940s) is an American former basketball player known for his college career at the University of Texas during the 1960s. A native of Haltom City, Texas, Arnold was an all-state player for Haltom High School before enrolling at Texas in the fall of 1964. Due to NCAA player eligibility rules at the time, freshmen could not play varsity basketball, so Arnold did not begin his career for the Longhorns until his sophomore season in 1965–66. In his three seasons, Arnold appeared in 66 games and averaged 13.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. His best year came in 1967–68, his senior season, in which he averaged 19.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while leading Texas to a second-place finish in the Southwest Conference (SWC). Arnold led the conference in scoring and was named to the All-SWC First Team while also being honored as the SWC Player of the Year. Arnold did not pursue a professional career. Billy Arnold (William Marshall Arnold) (September 21, 1926 – May 18, 1995) was a highly touted welterweight/middleweight prospect of the 1940s. Born in Slab Fork, West Virginia, Arnold turned pro November 1, 1943, while still in high school. He became an overnight sensation by racking up an impressive string of 16 straight knockout victories. Arnold's style was similar to Sugar Ray Robinson; he was a slick boxer with lightning-fast combinations, and a knockout punch. William Henry Arnold or Richard William Arnold (December 16, 1905 – November 10, 1976) was an American racecar driver. He won the 1930 Indianapolis 500. Early life and career Billy Arnold was born in Chicago on December 16, 1905. He earned his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and after his racing days were over, pursued a Ph.D. from the MIAT College of Technology. Arnold won the 1930 Indianapolis 500 after leading all but first two laps of the race, the most ever by a winner of the race and he won by a margin of 7 minutes and 17 seconds. He was 24 years old at the time. In 1931 he led 155 laps but crashed on lap 162 while holding a five-lap lead, suffering serious injuries along with his riding mechanic Spider Matlock. Arnold is a self-taught harmonica player and has worked with blues legends such as Bo Diddley, Johnny Shines, Otis Rush. Earl Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and others. Biography Born in Chicago as one of 16 children, he began playing harmonica as a child, and in 1948 received informal lessons from his near neighbour John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, shortly before the latter's death.
