Bill Walker (Australian Footballer, Born 1942)
William Herbert John Walker (born 23 February 1942 in Huntly, New Zealand) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL). He was the winner of the 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1970 Sandover Medals. Career Born in Huntly, New Zealand, Walker grew up in the wheatbelt town of Narembeen. Despite being regarded as perhaps the best country prospect in Western Australia in 1960, Walker’s father thought him too small to be successful at WANFL football. Once all eight WANFL clubs showed interest in him his father suggested Walker (who barracked for as a boy) should sign with Swan Districts – who underwent a major recruiting program over the 1960-61 off-season alongside the signing of Haydn Bunton junior as captain-coach. Huntly, New Zealand
Huntly ( mi, Rahui-Pōkeka) (population ) is a town in the Waikato district and region of the North Island of New Zealand. It was on State Highway 1 (until Huntly bypass opened in March 2020), south of Auckland and north of Hamilton. It is situated on the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) railway (served by Te Huia since 6 April 2021 at a rebuilt Raahui Pookeka-Huntly Station) and straddles the Waikato River. Huntly is within the Waikato District which is in the northern part of the Waikato region local government area. History and culture Originally settled by Māori, European migrants arrived in the area some time in the 1850s. The Huntly name was adopted in the 1870s when the postmaster named it after Huntly, Aberdeenshire in Scotland. He used an old 'Huntley Lodge' stamp to stamp mail from the early European settlement. Gregory William Walker (born 8 July 1967 in Midland, Western Australia, Midland, Western Australia) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and Woodville-West Torrens Football Club, Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL, South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Career Walker is the son of Bill Walker (Australian footballer, born 1942), Bill Walker, who played 305 games for Swan Districts between 1961 and 1976. Garry Sidebottom
Garry Thomas Sidebottom (21 November 1954 – 28 March 2019) was an Australian rules football player who played for the St Kilda, Geelong and Fitzroy Football Clubs in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Swan Districts in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) during the 1970s and 1980s. Career Sidebottom was a powerful and fearless player ideal for playing at centre half forward or as a ruckman. A versatile forward good in the air and hard in the clinches, he kicked 227 goals while at Swan Districts and 145 goals while in the VFL. He played in the inaugural State of Origin team for Western Australia in 1977 when Western Australia defeated Victoria. Bob Beecroft
Robert James Beecroft (born 11 January 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), Swan Districts Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and the Woodville Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Beecroft made his debut with Swan Districts in 1970, playing 126 games as a ruckman, being named All Australian for his performance in the 1972 Perth Carnival and the Swan's Best and Fairest award. He played for Western Australia three years later and was recruited by Fitzroy for the following season. As a key forward for the Lions, Beecroft topped their goalkicking list four times with a best of 87 goals in 1979 which was at the time a club record. The 1969 WANFL season was the 85th season of the Western Australian National Football League.
