Bill Wainwright
William Wainwright (24 November 1908 – 27 October 2000) was a British communist activist. Wainwright was born in 1908. He grew up in Stepney in the East End of London, and studied chemistry at Chelsea Polytechnic before joining the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). Home Guard (United Kingdom)
The Home Guard (initially Local Defence Volunteers or LDV) was an armed citizen militia supporting the British Army during the Second World War. Operational from 1940 to 1944, the Home Guard had 1.5 million local volunteers otherwise ineligible for military service, such as those who were too young or too old to join the regular armed services (regular military service was restricted to those aged 18 to 41) and those in reserved occupations. Excluding those already in the armed services, the civilian police or civil defence, approximately one in five men were volunteers. Their role was to act as a secondary defence force in case of invasion by the forces of Nazi Germany. The Home Guard were to try to slow down the advance of the enemy even by a few hours to give the regular troops time to regroup. Bill Alexander (politician)
Bill Alexander (13 June 1910 – 11 July 2000), born as William Alexander, was a leading activist within the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB), most known for commanding the British Battalion of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. During World War II he underwent a commissioning course at Sandhurst military academy, graduating top of his year. He then served in Germany, Italy and Northern Africa, during which he was promoted to the rank of captain in the Reconnaissance Corps. Later in life he became an author, the vice-chairman of the International Brigade Association, and the president of London's Marx Memorial Library. Alexander spent the remainder of his life promoting Marxism–Leninism, and was a member of the CPGB until the party was dissolved in 1991. George Matthews (24 January 1917 – 29 March 2005) was a British communist activist and newspaper editor. Life Born to a wealthy family in Bedfordshire, Matthews was educated at Bedford Modern School, studied agriculture at the University of Reading and joined the Labour Party. Democratic Left was a post-communist political organisation in the United Kingdom during the 1990s, growing out of the Eurocommunist strand within the Communist Party of Great Britain and its magazine ''Marxism Today'' (which closed around the same time). It was established in 1991 when the CPGB decided to reform itself into a left-leaning reformist political multi-issue grassroots think-tank based on the party's ''Manifesto for New Times''.
