Bill Rose (footballer)
William John Rose (9 May 1931 – 10 October 2007) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1950s. Rose was a follower in Collingwood's 1953 premiership side, having been a back pocket in the team which lost the Grand Final a year earlier. Nyah West
Nyah West is a town in Victoria (Australia) near the Murray River, the border with New South Wales. It is near the Murray Valley Highway (Nyah West is on the railway line, Nyah is on the highway), north-west of Melbourne and north-west of Swan Hill. The town was established when the railway line was extended from Swan Hill to Piangil in 1915 passing some distance to the west of the established township of Nyah. A full Post Office opened here on 1 December 1917. Nyah West Magistrates' Court was formally closed on 1 September 1982, having used a local hall rather than its own courthouse and not having sat for many years. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. Victorian Football League (1897–1989)
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. In the sport of Australian rules football, each of the eighteen players in a team is assigned to a particular named position on the field of play. These positions describe both the player's main role and by implication their location on the ground. As the game has evolved, tactics and team formations have changed, and the names of the positions and the duties involved have evolved too. There are 18 positions in Australian rules football, not including four (sometimes 6–8) interchange players who may replace another player on the ground at any time during play. The fluid nature of the modern game means the positions in football are not as formally defined as in sports such as rugby or American football. Even so, most players will play in a limited range of positions throughout their career, as each position requires a particular set of skills. Bob Rose (footballer)
Robert Arthur "Bob" Rose (7 August 1928 – 7 July 2003) was an Australian rules footballer and coach in the VFL. He is widely regarded as the greatest player ever to play for Collingwood. Playing career A Collingwood legend, he has had achievements of the many including the greatest honours for a club, and in the VFL/AFL. From country club Nyah West, Rose debuted in 1946. He was a genuine all-round sportsman, who was looking down the path of a professional boxing career, but decided to play the game of football. Rose was courageous in the midfield, and was very skillful on both sides. His honours included four best and fairest awards, was a leading goalkicker in a premiership season, including All-Australian honours. Kevin Rose (Australian Rules Footballer)
Kevin Thomas Rose (born 4 June 1939) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the VFL. He was one of four brothers who played for Collingwood with the most famous being his older brother Bob Rose. Rose started his career as a half back flanker before becoming a ruck-rover. He was a Collingwood premiership player in 1958 and played in three losing grand final teams. He subsequently played for six years with Prahran on the Victorian Football Association. In 2003 he was selected in Prahran's Team of the Century. After retiring as a player he took up coaching and was appointed senior coach of Fitzroy in 1975. Ralph Desmond Rose (2 February 1943 - 14 October 1992) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Rose, a Nyah West recruit, appeared in the opening 16 rounds of the 1962 VFL season. The centre half-forward played a further nine games in 1963. He is the youngest of the four Rose brothers who played for Collingwood, Bill, Bob and Kevin. In 1964 he accepted an offer to captain-coach Wycheproof-Narraport and in 1967 he joined Maryborough as playing coach.
