Bill Reed (actor)
William Ernest Reed (born May 25, 1954) is a retired professional ice hockey defenceman. He was drafted in the fourth round, 72nd overall, by the Boston Bruins in the 1974 NHL Entry Draft. Reed never played in the NHL, but did play 40 games in the World Hockey Association with the Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades and Calgary Cowboys during the 1974–75 and 1975–76 WHA seasons. As a youth, he played in the 1966 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Toronto Faustina minor ice hockey team from. Reed also appeared in the movie Slap Shot. During the opening sequence Reed, wearing jersey #2, collides with a teammate wearing the #14 allowing the Chiefs to score. Michigan Stags
The Michigan Stags were a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit that played a portion of the 1974–75 season in the World Hockey Association. On January 18, 1975, the team folded, but the league immediately took over operation and moved the franchise to Baltimore where it was known as the Baltimore Blades. The Stags originated as the Los Angeles Aces, but were renamed the Los Angeles Sharks before their first game, one of the WHA's original twelve teams. The Stags played at Cobo Arena, and the Blades at the Baltimore Civic Center. Michigan Stags Having made their fortunes in industrial chemicals, Detroiters Charles Nolton and Peter Shagena bought the Los Angeles Sharks from Dennis Murphy and relocated the club to Detroit as the Michigan Stags. The San Diego Mariners were an ice hockey team based in San Diego that played in the World Hockey Association from 1974 to 1977 at the San Diego Sports Arena. Previous to being in San Diego, the team was known as the New York Raiders, New York Golden Blades, and Jersey Knights. After folding in 1977, San Diego Mariners' name was adopted by an unrelated franchise in the low-level, minor professional Pacific Hockey League (PHL). Notable alumni Star players for the Mariners included defenseman Harry Howell, center Andre Lacroix, and goaltender Ernie Wakely.
