Bill Purifoy
William Dewitt Purifoy, Sr. (November 15, 1959 – October 14, 2013) was an American football defensive end in the United States Football League (USFL) for the Arizona Wranglers. He played college football at the University of Tulsa. Early years Purifoy attended Steel Valley High School, where he practiced football and basketball. He received All-conference and All-state honors at defensive tackle as a senior. He enrolled at the New Mexico Military Institute. He transferred to the University of Tulsa after his freshman season. He was named a starter at defensive end as a sophomore. He had 15 tackles (11 solo) against the University of Louisville as a junior. In 1980, he left school and returned to his hometown in Pittsburgh to work as a fireman. He returned for his senior season in 1981 and was named a team's co-captain. Defensive end (DE) is a defensive position in the sport of gridiron football. This position has designated the players at each end of the defensive line, but changes in formation (American football), formations over the years have substantially changed how the position is played. History Early formations, with six- and seven-man line defense, seven-man lines, used the end as a containment player, whose job was first to prevent an "end run" around his position, then secondarily to force plays inside. When most teams adopted a five-man line, two different styles of end play developed: "crashing" ends, who rushed into the backfield to disrupt plays, and "stand-up" or "waiting" ends, who played the more traditional containment style. UPMC Mercy is a main hospital facility of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and is located in the Uptown section of the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, adjacent to Duquesne University, and a few blocks from the PPG Paints Arena and downtown Pittsburgh. The Michigan Panthers were a professional American football team based in the Detroit, Michigan area. The Panthers competed in the United States Football League (USFL) as a member of the Western Conference and Central Division. The team played its home games at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. Amid financial struggles following the 1984 season, the team was merged with the Oakland Invaders in 1985, where they would operate under the Invaders name.
