Bill Perry (cartoonist)
William Miles Perry (September 26, 1905 – February 13, 1995) was an American cartoonist, known as an assistant on, and later a primary artist for, the ''Gasoline Alley'' comic strip. Born in Chicago, Perry began his career in the mailroom of the ''Chicago Tribune''. Some say that Frank King, to prove his teaching prowess, arbitrarily plucked Perry from that post and trained him in cartooning. Dick Moores
Richard Arnold Moores (December 12, 1909 – April 22, 1986) was an American cartoonist whose best known work was the comic strip ''Gasoline Alley'', which he worked on for nearly three decades. Biography Moores was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on December 12, 1909. After graduating from high school in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attended Fort Wayne Art School. He also received a year of training at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts before spending five years working for Chester Gould on '' Dick Tracy''. While working for Gould in Chicago, he met and married Gretchen, a musician. He met Frank King while in Chicago, sharing a studio with him while drawing his own strip, ''Jim Hardy'', from 1936 to 1942. The strip, distributed by United Features Syndicate, was about a young man, down on his luck. Jim Scancarelli
James Scancarelli (born August 24, 1941), known professionally as Jim Scancarelli, is an American cartoonist and musician. Since 1986, he has been writing and drawing the syndicated comic strip ''Gasoline Alley'' for Tribune Media Services. In that role, his predecessors were Frank King, Bill Perry and Dick Moores. He had served as an assistant to the latter for several years before taking over. Scancarelli is also a prizewinning bluegrass fiddler. Early life and career Born in New York City, Scancarelli is the son of an archivist for the Italian embassy. When he was still an infant, his family moved to his mother's home state of North Carolina. When his family moved to Washington, D.C., for his father’s job, Scancarelli became the target of bullies in school. This circumstance played a role in developing his love of comics. Maurice Horn
Maurice Horn (born 1931) is a French-American comics historian, author, and editor, considered to be one of the first serious academics to study comics. He is the editor of ''The World Encyclopedia of Comics'', ''The World Encyclopedia of Cartoons'', and ''100 Years of American Newspaper Comics''. Born in France, he is based in New York City. Career Horn grew up in France particularly fascinated by American comics. In the late 1950s, collaborating with countryman (later the editorial director of the French publisher Dargaud) under the joint pen names Karl von Kraft and Franck Sauvage (after Doc Savage), Horn co-wrote a number of French-language pulp mystery and spy novels. ''Harold Teen'' is a discontinued, long-running American comic strip written and drawn by Carl Ed (pronounced "eed"). Publisher Joseph Medill Patterson may have suggested and certainly approved the strip's concept, loosely based on Booth Tarkington's successful novel ''Seventeen''. The strip ran from 1919 to 1959. Asked in the late 1930s why he had started the strip, Ed answered, "Twenty years ago, there was no comic strip on adolescence. I thought every well-balanced comic sheet should have one." Sundaes on Sunday Under the title ''The Love Life of Harold Teen'', it debuted as a Sunday strip in the ''Chicago Tribune'' on May 4, 1919, and a few months later it was nationally syndicated by the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate.
