Bill Molyneux
William Mitchell Molyneux (born 1935) is an Australian horticulturist and author who has researched and developed many popular cultivars of Australian plants, including Banksia 'Birthday Candles', and Isopogon 'Woorikee 2000'. '' Grevillea molyneuxii'' was named in his honour. He has also written books for the Australian garden. Bill lives at Wombat Bend in Victoria Australia surrounded by examples of his work and passions. Banksia 'Birthday Candles'
''Banksia'' 'Birthday Candles' is a dwarf cultivar of ''Banksia spinulosa'' var. ''spinulosa'' developed by Bill Molyneux of Austraflora Nurseries in Montrose, Victoria. It has since become the highest-selling native plant in Australia. Description Its height averages 18 cm, and its width 44 cm. The inflorescences are short and upright and appear on branch ends from early autumn to early spring (March to September in Australia). They are yellow, with contrasting red styles. Origin It was selected in 1985 from a number of seedlings which were raised at Austraflora Nurseries in Australia, the original material hailing from Schnapper Point near Ulladulla on the New South Wales South Coast. Cultivation The cultivar is said to be adaptable to a wide range of climatic conditions including a moderate tolerance of frost. It has a high tolerance to salt-laden coastal winds. Isopogon 'Woorikee 2000'
''Isopogon'', commonly known as conesticks, conebushes or coneflowers, is a genus of about forty species of flowering plants in the family Proteaceae, and are endemic to Australia. They are shrubs with rigid leaves, bisexual flowers in a dense spike or "cone" and the fruit is a small, hairy nut. Description Plants in the genus ''Isopogon'' are erect or prostrate shrubs with rigid, usually compound, rarely simple leaves. Compound leaves are deeply divided with flat or cylindrical lobes. The flowers are usually arranged on the ends of branches, usually surrounded by bracts, in a more or less conical or spherical spike. Each flower is bisexual and symmetrical, the tepals spreading as the flower develops, the lower part persisting unit the fruit expands. ''Grevillea molyneuxii'', commonly known as Wingello grevillea, is a species of flowering plant in the family Proteaceae and is endemic to a restricted area of south-eastern New South Wales. It is a spreading shrub with narrowly oblong or narrowly elliptic to linear leaves and cylindrical clusters of reddish flowers. Description ''Grevillea molyneuxii'' is a spreading to weakly erect shrub that typically grows to a height of . Its leaves are narrowly oblong or narrowly elliptic to linear, long, wide and sometimes sharply-pointed. The upper surface of the leaves is smooth and the lower side is silky-hairy, sometimes hidden by the downturned edges of the leaves. The flowers are arranged in clusters of 5 to 15 on the ends of the branches on a peduncle long. The flowers are red or reddish, the pistil long.
