Bill J. Dukes
Bill J. Dukes (February 26, 1927 – December 18, 2014) was an American politician from Decatur, Alabama. Born in Tarma, Kentucky, Dukes served in the United States Army. He then received his bachelor's degree from Bowling Green College of Commerce. He was an office manager, assistant to the Mayor of Decatur, Alabama. Dukes served on the Decatur City Council in 1968 and then served as Mayor of Decatur from 1976 until 1994. He received 75% or more in every election he ran in for both mayor and state representative. From 1994 until 2010, he served in the Alabama House of Representatives. Dukes died in Decatur, Alabama of Parkinson disease. Decatur (dɪˈkeɪtə(r)) is the largest city and county seat of Morgan County (with a portion also in Limestone County) in the U.S. state of Alabama. Nicknamed "The River City", it is located in northern Alabama on the banks of Wheeler Lake, along the Tennessee River. The population in 2020 was 57,938. Decatur is the core city of the two-county large Decatur metropolitan area, which had an estimated population of 156,494 in 2020. Combined with the Huntsville Metropolitan Area, the two create the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area, of which Decatur is the second-largest city. Like many southern cities in the early 19th century, Decatur's early success was based upon its location along a river. Nonnell () is an unincorporated community located in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, United States. History Nonnell was originally named Elk Valley. The community was renamed for John Lennon who was a maintenance supervisor for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad with his surname being reversed.
