Bill Davies (golfer)
William Henry Davies (c. 1892 – 25 October 1967) was an English professional golfer. He finished in the top 10 in the Open Championship four times. He played in the 1931 and 1933 Ryder Cups. Golf career Prior to World War I, Davies was professional at Hooton Park Golf Club. He entered the 1913 Open Championship at Hoylake but failed to qualify. In September that year, he reached the final stages of the News of the World Matchplay, finishing 5th in the northern section qualifying, although he lost 2&1 to Fred Leach in the first round. He won £5 for reaching the final stage. In 1914 he won the 6th Liverpool and District Professional Championship at Leasowe Golf Club. He tied with H Cadwell on 148 but won the playoff the following day 147 to 150, winning £10 and a gold medal. During the war he was in the Denbighshire Hussars. The England–Ireland Professional Match was an annual men's professional golf competition between teams representing England and Ireland. It was played in 1932 and 1933 before the Irish Open. The matches followed the same form as the England–Scotland Professional Match that had been played just before the Open Championship. The match was played on a single day with 12 players in each team who played 6 foursomes and 12 singles matches. England won the first match 16–2 and the second match 13–3 after which the match was discontinued. The teams met again in 1938 as part of the Llandudno International Golf Trophy. The England–Scotland Professional Match was an annual men's professional golf competition between teams representing England and Scotland. It was played from 1903 to the start of World War I and was then revived in 1932 and played until the start of World War II. The match was played on a single day, generally a few days before the Open Championship. Except on one occasion, there were 12 players in each team who played 12 singles matches and 6 foursomes. Scotland won the inaugural match in 1903 but didn't win another match, although three matches were tied. The event was organised by the PGA and only members of the PGA were eligible to play. Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is contested every two years with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup is named after the English businessman Samuel Ryder who donated the trophy. The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. The Southport Tournament was a professional golf tournament played in the Southport area in North West England. It was founded in 1930 when it was sponsored by a Manchester newspaper, the ''Daily Dispatch''. Northern Professional Championship
The Northern Professional Championship was a professional golf tournament played in Northern England. The event was generally a regional tournament but from 1923 and 1927 and in 1936 it was an open event with significant prize money. The event was started in 1920 by the Northern section of the PGA with entry restricted to members of that section. In 1923 the Championship became a national event; the Championship being extended to 72 holes with £350 in prize money under the sponsorship of the Manchester ''Daily Dispatch''. In 1925 the prize money was increased to £1000 with £350 for the winner. In early 1928 the ''Daily Dispatch'' withdrew their support for the championship which had been planned for Birkdale in July. Leeds Cup
The Leeds Cup is a golf tournament that has been played annually in northern England since 1902. The event is organised by the north region of the Professional Golfers' Association. It is the oldest trophy in professional golf that is still played for. The Tooting Bec Cup is older, having been first played for in 1901, but is no longer contested. The Leeds Challenge Cup was first contested in May 1902 at Leeds Golf Club. Abe Mitchell
Henry Abraham Mitchell (18 January 1887 – 11 June 1947) was an English professional golfer. Mitchell had eight top-10 finishes out of 17 appearances in the Open Championship, his best performance being fourth in 1920. He was runner-up in the 1912 Amateur Championship and won the 1924 Miami Open. Early life Mitchell was born in East Grinstead, Sussex on 18 January 1887. He was the illegitimate son of Mary Mitchell. Mary married a Mark Seymour in 1890 and Abe was brought up by his grandparents, George and Sophia Mitchell. Mark and Mary had a son Mark, Abe's half-brother, who also became a successful professional golfer. Mitchell was a fine amateur, and played for England against the Scots in 1910 and won.
