Bill Cox (baseball)
William Donald Cox (June 23, 1913 – February 16, 1988) was an American politician and professional baseball pitcher. Baseball career Cox played all or part of five seasons in Major League Baseball, from 1936 until 1940, for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Browns. He also officiated at high school and college basketball games and at the Illinois State High School Finals in Champaign, Illinois. Political career Cox served in the United States Army during World War II. He served on the Coles County, Illinois School Board Unit No. One from 1954 to 1958. He also served as sheriff of Coles County from 1958 to 1962 and as treasurer of Coles County from 1962 to 1966. Cox was a Republican. Cox served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1967 to 1973. Pitcher
In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. There are many different types of pitchers, such as the starting pitcher, relief pitcher, middle reliever, lefty specialist, setup man, and the closer. Traditionally, the pitcher also bats. Harlington Wood Jr. (April 17, 1920 – December 29, 2008) was an American lawyer, jurist, political figure and an amateur actor. He served as a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit from 1976 until his death in 2008, after earlier serving as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
