Bill Carpenter (writer)
William Stanley Carpenter Jr. (born September 30, 1937) is a retired American military officer and former college football player. While playing college football at the United States Military Academy, he gained national prominence as the "Lonesome End" of the Army Black Knights football, Army football team. During his military service in the Vietnam War, he again achieved fame when he saved his company by directing airstrikes on his own position. For the action, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (United States), Distinguished Service Cross. Personal life Carpenter was born in Springfield Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Springfield, Pennsylvania, on September 30, 1937, to William Stanley Carpenter, Sr. (1907–1945) and Helen Carpenter (née Sparks). Springfield Township, or simply Springfield, is a township in Delaware County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The population was 24,211 at the 2010 census. Springfield is a suburb of Philadelphia, located about west of the city. Geography Springfield is located in eastern Delaware County at (39.926961, -75.335231). According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.28%, is water. The northeastern border of the township is formed by Darby Creek, and the western border is formed by Crum Creek, both of which flow south to the Delaware River.
