The Big Three ( es, Los Tres Grandes) is the nickname of the three most successful sports clubs in Costa Rica. The football teams of Deportivo Saprissa, LD Alajuelense, and CS Herediano have a great rivalry, and are usually the main contenders for the title. Combined they share a total of 86 out of 103 Costa Rican Football Championships ever played and generally end up sharing the top three positions. None of them have been relegated from the Primera División either, having been participants in all editions since 1921. Several clubs outside the big three have won the Costa Rican league, with CS La Libertad having the fourth-most national titles behind the Big Three in Costa Rica, with six. Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto
The Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto is a football stadium in ''El Llano'' neighborhood of Alajuela, Costa Rica, which is the home of Liga Deportiva Alajuelense, one of the most successful football clubs from Costa Rica. It also serves as the home ground of Carmelita, who rent the stadium from Alajuelense. The stadium, which holds a capacity of 17,895 people, is named after Alejandro Morera Soto, a notable former player of LD Alajuelense, FC Barcelona, and Hércules CF. History Construction The project to find a proper site for a permanent home started in 1938 when the director of the club, Carlos Bolaños, proposed that the club should purchase its own land. The land was purchased in 1940, but the site would not be soccer-ready until 1942, when Alajuelense played its first match at the site. The Big Three ( pt, Os Três Grandes) is the nickname of the three most successful and biggest football clubs in Portugal. The teams of S.L. Benfica and Sporting CP, both from Lisbon, and of FC Porto, from Porto, have a great rivalry and are usually the main contenders for the Primeira Liga title. They share all but two of the Portuguese Football Championships ever played, and generally end up sharing the top three positions. None of them have been relegated from the Primeira Liga either, having been participants in all editions since its first season in 1934–35. The Primera División of Costa Rica, commonly known as Fútbol de Primera División (FPD), and Liga Promerica for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional association football division in Costa Rica. It is administered by the Unión de Clubes de Fútbol de la Primera División (UNAFUT). The league consists of 12 teams, with the last-placed team relegated to the Liga de Ascenso.
