Big Sur Unified School District
Big Sur Unified School District is a public school district in the southern Big Sur region of Monterey County, California, United States. It was originally the Pacific Valley School in the 1920s and served residents on the south coast including Manchester, Plaskett, Lucia, and Gorda, The Pacific Valley School District was formally established in the 1950s and was renamed Big Sur Unified School District in 2012. It consists of the public Pacific Valley School in southern Big Sur, which serves grades K–12 in several small hamlets and communities. It is also the authorizing agency for the Big Sur Charter School located in Monterey. The district does not include the Cooper School in Big Sur Village which is administered as part of the Carmel Unified School District. Manchester, Monterey County, California
Manchester (sometimes known as Mansfield) was a mining town in the Los Burros Mining District in the southern Big Sur region of Monterey County, California from about 1875 to 1895. The town was reached by a road from King City to Jolon. From Jolon travelers could ride or take a stage or wagon to the Wagon Caves, followed by a difficult trail over the steep Santa Lucia Mountains to the site, about inland of Cape San Martin. Prospecting began in the area in the 1850s. In the spring of 1887, after 10 years of varied success, William Dugay Cruikshank discovered lode gold at the head of Alder Creek. He opened the Last Chance Mine, later known as the Buclimo Mine. The Last Chance mine produced about $62,000 (or about $ today) in gold ore. The mines were not very productive, and most mining activity ceased by about 1895. Renewed attempts at exploiting the ore in the early 1900s failed. Plaskett is a thinly populated oceanside hamlet alongside the Big Sur Coast Highway in the southern Big Sur region of Monterey County, California. It lies at an elevation of 203 feet (62 m). It consists of a USFS campground and station, two small resorts, a small school, and a few dozen families spread over the general region. Attractions and services Camping and hiking The USFS Plaskett Creek Campground has 44 campsites. The campground is on the east side of Highway 1 in a forest of Monterey Pine, Cypress, and Cedar trees. There are three group campsites for tent and RV camping. There are no hookups or a dump station. Each site is equipped with a table and campfire ring with grill. Flush toilets, sinks and drinking water are provided throughout the campground. Lucia, California
Lucia is a hamlet located in the south region of Big Sur, California. Wilber Judson Harlan filed the first patent for land in the area in 1885. His family has continually resided in the location and the fifth generation still operates a hotel alongside the Big Sur Coast Highway. The Lucia Lodge is located south of Big Sur Village and north of Hearst Castle. The lodge is one of a very few along the south coast of Big Sur to offer accommodations to travelers. A small store and restaurant were destroyed by a fire in August 2021. The area is sparsely settled and Lucia miles away from any other business.
