Big Pine Mountain
Big Pine Mountain is a mountain located in the San Rafael Mountains of the California Transverse Ranges. High enough to receive snowfall during the winter, The summit, at 6800+ feet (2,074+ m), is the highest point in the San Rafael Mountains, the Dick Smith Wilderness, and Santa Barbara County, California, Santa Barbara County. The peak and the surrounding area were severely impacked by the Zaca fire in 2007. List Of Highest Points In California By County
This is a list of highest points in California, in alphabetical order by county. All elevations use the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88), the currently accepted vertical control datum for United States, Canada and Mexico. Elevations are from the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) when available. Others are from the United States Geological Survey topographic maps when available. These can be found on the Peakbagger.com web pages. Elevations followed by a plus sign (+) were interpolated by the compiler using topographic map contour lines. The true elevation is between that shown and the elevation plus the contour line interval which is forty feet in most instances. Elevations from the NGS are rounded to the nearest whole number. Hundred Peaks Section
The Hundred Peaks Section (HPS) is a mountaineering society within the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club that serves to provide mountaineering activities for Sierra Club members in the southern Sierra Nevada, the Transverse Ranges, and the Peninsular Ranges, and to honor mountaineers who have summited peaks in those mountain ranges. The section hosts summit hikes and scrambles in the Los Angeles and Inland Empire area 3 to 4 times per week. These hikes are open to the public. History The Hundred Peaks Section is the second-oldest of the Angeles Chapter mountaineer sections, and is its most active. It was started by outdoorsman Weldon Fairbanks Heald (1901-1967) in 1941, who wanted to summit 100 peaks in Southern California. San Rafael Mountains
The San Rafael Mountains are a mountain range in central Santa Barbara County, California, U.S., separating the drainages of the Santa Ynez River and the Santa Maria River. They are part of the Transverse Ranges system of Southern California which in turn are part of the Pacific Coast Ranges system of western North America. Geography Most of the mountain range is within the Los Padres National Forest, and the northern slopes are included in the remote San Rafael Wilderness area. The highest peaks include Big Pine Mountain (6,820 ft, 2,079 m), San Rafael Mountain (6,593 ft, 2,010 m) and McKinley Mountain (6,220 ft, 1,896 m), none of which are easily accessible except by foot or horse. A mountain is an elevated portion of the Earth's crust, generally with steep sides that show significant exposed bedrock. Transverse Ranges
The Transverse Ranges are a group of mountain ranges of southern California, in the Pacific Coast Ranges physiographic region in North America. The Transverse Ranges begin at the southern end of the California Coast Ranges and lie within Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Kern counties. The Peninsular Ranges lie to the south. Dick Smith Wilderness
The Dick Smith Wilderness is a wilderness area in the mountains of eastern Santa Barbara County, California, United States, with a portion in Ventura County, California, Ventura County. It is completely contained within the Los Padres National Forest, and is northeast of the city of Santa Barbara, California, Santa Barbara and north of the city of Ojai, California, Ojai. It is most easily accessible from two trailheads off California State Route 33, State Route 33, which runs north from Ojai.
