Big Leaguer
''Big Leaguer'' is a 1953 American sports film, sports drama (film and television), drama film starring Edward G. Robinson and was the first film directed by Robert Aldrich. Although this story is fiction, Robinson's character in it, Hans Lobert, was an actual baseball player who played for five Major League Baseball teams and managed the Philadelphia Phillies. Third-billed in the cast, Jeff Richards (baseball player/actor), Jeff Richards was a professional ballplayer before he became an actor, and National Baseball Hall of Fame, Hall of Fame pitcher Carl Hubbell appears as himself. Neil Oliver "Bing" Russell (May 5, 1926 – April 8, 2003) was an American actor and Class A minor-league baseball club owner. He was the father of Hollywood actor Kurt Russell and grandfather of ex–major league baseball player Matt Franco and actor Wyatt Russell. Early life Russell was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, the son of Ruth Stewart (née Vogel) and Warren Oliver Russell. He always wanted to become an actor and studied drama at Brattleboro High School. He grew up around the New York Yankees’ spring training camp in St. Petersburg, Florida, in the 1930s and 1940s, where his father ran a floatplane service. Bob Trocolor
Robert G. Trocolor (March 31, 1917 – July 27, 1984) was an American football player and coach. He was also a college basketball and football head coach as well as movie actor. Football career Player Trocolor played college football for the Long Island Blackbirds before transferring to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He then went undrafted in 1942 but eventually landed a spot with the National Football League's New York Giants, for whom he played for two seasons as a substitute quarterback, punt returner and halfback. In 1944, Trocolor was traded to the Brooklyn Tigers and played in two games. The team merged with the Boston Yanks in 1945, but Trocolor did not get picked up, so his professional football career ended after three seasons. Alexander Sebastian Campanis (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Σεβαστιανός Καμπάνης; November 2, 1916 – June 21, 1998) was an American executive in Major League Baseball (MLB). He had a brief major league playing career, as a second baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943; he was the first Greek player in MLB history. Frank S. Ferguson (December 25, 1906 – September 12, 1978) was an American character actor with hundreds of appearances in both film and television. Background Ferguson was the younger of two children of W. Thomas Ferguson, a native Scottish merchant, and his American wife Annie Boynton. He grew up in his native Ferndale. He graduated from Ferndale Union High School in 1927. He earned a bachelor's degree in speech and drama at the University of California and a master's degree from Cornell University. He also taught at UCLA and Cornell. As a young man, he became connected with Gilmor Brown, the founder and director of the Pasadena Community Playhouse, and became one of its first directors.
