Big Five Law Firms (South Africa)
The Big Five law firms is a term informally used in South Africa to refer to those law firms which, collectively, are perceived to be the leading law firms based in South Africa. The following firms are usually seen as comprising the "Big Five" (listed alphabetically): Note1: Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr was formerly allied with DLA Piper. Its affiliation with DLA Piper ended at the end of August 2015. Note2: On 1 February 2013, the firm entered into a collaborative alliance with global law firm Linklaters. Note3: Deneys Reitz Inc, and then Norton Rose Fulbright, was formerly considered to form part of the big five law firms. Due to its decline, Werksmans, which was not part of the big five law firms, took its place. The term ''Big Six'' law firms referred, prior to 2012, to the six largest - by lawyer head count - Australian law firms. The Silver Circle is a group of elite corporate law firms headquartered in London that has evolved significantly as the UK legal market has been affected by globalisation and mergers. The law firms generally described by ''The Lawyer'' magazine as comprising the Silver Circle were historically Ashurst, Herbert Smith, Macfarlanes, SJ Berwin and Travers Smith, but are currently limited to Macfarlanes, Travers Smith and Mishcon de Reya. The Magic Circle is an informal term describing the five most prestigious London-headquartered multinational law firms, which generally outperform the rest of the London law firms on profitability. The term has also been used to describe the most prestigious barristers' chambers in London. All of the 'Magic Circle' law firms and barristers' chambers specialise primarily in corporate law. Bell Dewar
Bell Dewar was a South African law firm. On 1 February 2013, it merged with Fasken Martineau, an international business law and litigation firm. History When gold was discovered in Johannesburg in 1886, William Henry Somerset Bell was asked to examine and report on mining claims belonging to the Grahamstown Gold Mining Syndicate. On the strength of his report, the Grahamstown Gold Mining Company Ltd was floated; Bell became a director. Work for lawyers specializing in mining was available; the following year, Bell went to the Kimberley diamond fields. Subsequently, in 1889, he moved with his family to open a practice in Johannesburg. Charles Alexander Dewar joined Bell in 1915. As an apparent company and mining law expert, Bell attracted the attention of foreign interest groups investing in South Africa in the early 20th century.
