Metropolis
A metropolis () is a large city or conurbation which is a significant economic, political, and cultural center for a country or region, and an important hub for regional or international connections, commerce, and communications. A big city belonging to a larger urban agglomeration, but which is not the core of that agglomeration, is not generally considered a metropolis but a part of it. The plural of the word is ''metropolises'', although the Latin plural is ''metropoles'', from the Greek ''metropoleis'' (). ''Big City'' is the thirty-third studio album by American country music artist Merle Haggard backed by The Strangers, released in 1981. It was his debut on the Epic label after ending his association with MCA. ''Big City'' peaked at number three on the Billboard Country Album charts and number 161 on the Pop Album charts. It was an RIAA-certified Gold album. Background After five years at MCA Records, Haggard jumped to Epic in 1982, and the move appeared to spark his creativity; he wrote or co-wrote eight of the LP's twelve tracks, including its two #1 singles, " Big City" and "My Favorite Memory." Haggard entered the studio with his band the Strangers and his mentor Lewis Talley and, in a two-day marathon recording session, produced enough songs for this release, plus Haggard’s 1982 LP, ''Going Where the Lonely Go''. Co-written by Haggard and Dean Holloway, the song was released in January 1982 as the second single and title track from his album ''Big City (Merle Haggard album), Big City''. In April, the song was his 27th number-one single on the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Hot Country Songs, Hot Country Singles chart. Production The song was inspired by a remark by Dean Holloway, Haggard's lifelong friend and tour bus driver. At the end of a packed two-day recording session at Britannia Studios in Los Angeles, Haggard went to the bus to check on Holloway, who had been minding the bus, and asked him how he was doing. "Big City" is the fifth and last single from the English alternative rock band Spacemen 3. It entered the UK charts at position #88. It was released in January 1991, shortly after the band split up, as a 7", 12" and CD single. The 7" contains a shorter version of the song than the 12". A remixed version was released separately. The 7" edit appears on the band's final album ''Recurring'' under the title "Big City (Everyone I Know Can Be Found Here)". The track featured in the Simpsons episode Every Man's Dream, as the soundtrack to a psychedelic drug trip montage. It was used with songwriter Peter Kember's approval. Tol Hansse
Tol Hansse (born Johannes Adrianus "Hans" van Tol, 3 April 1940, Laren - 29 April 2002) was a Dutch singer and musician. He was the son of cabaret artist . Because of his father's history of collaboration during World War II he changed his name. Hansse played trumpet accompanying Tom Manders, and was in the rock band The Sharks with Clous van Mechelen. He had a modestly successful career as a singer-songwriter in the 1970s. Van Mechelen wrote the music for his biggest hit, "Big City" (1978), still considered a classic song about Amsterdam. ''The Big City'' is a 1928 American silent crime film directed by Tod Browning and starring Lon Chaney. Waldemar Young wrote the screenplay, based on a story by Tod Browning. The film is now lost. The last known print of the film had been sent to Australia in the late 1950s. The film was returned to MGM and placed in their vaults where it was destroyed in the same vault fire that also claimed '' London After Midnight'' and ''The Tower of Lies'' in 1965. A short trailer for the film survives at Cinémathèque française in France, but it does not include any actual footage from the film itself. Stills exist showing Chaney in the Chuck Collins role. This was Betty Compson's only film at MGM. The sets were designed by Cedric Gibbons. The set for Chuck Collins' nightclub was also used for the nightclub scenes in ''While the City Sleeps''.
