Big Blue River (Indiana)
The Big Blue River is an U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map, accessed May 19, 2011 tributary of the Driftwood River in east-central Indiana in the United States. Via the Driftwood, White, Wabash and Ohio rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River. Course The Big Blue rises in northeastern Henry County and flows generally southwestwardly through Rush, Hancock, Shelby and Johnson counties, past the towns of New Castle, Knightstown, Carthage, Morristown, Shelbyville and Edinburgh. It joins Sugar Creek to form the Driftwood River west of Edinburgh. At Shelbyville, it collects the Little Blue River. At the USGS station at Shelbyville, Indiana, the Big Blue River has an approximate discharge of 513 cubic feet per second. Carthage is a town in Ripley Township, Rush County, Indiana, United States, located along the Big Blue River. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. History Carthage was platted in 1834. The town was named after Carthage, North Carolina. A post office has been in operation at Carthage since 1835. The Henry Henley Public Library was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. Geography Carthage is located at (39.739189, -85.570553). According to the 2010 census, Carthage has a total area of , all land. Carthage is surrounded by farmland and woodland. Education The town is served by the Charles A. Beard Memorial School Corporation school district, based at Knightstown in Henry County to the north. Local elementary students attended Carthage Elementary School until its closure in 2014. Course Sugar Creek rises in western Henry County and flows generally southwestwardly through Madison, Hancock, Shelby and Johnson counties, past the towns of Spring Lake and New Palestine. It joins the Big Blue River to form the Driftwood River in southeastern Johnson County, west of Edinburgh. Sugar Creek has a mean annual discharge of 532 cubic feet per second near Edinburgh, Indiana.
