Biathlon has been contested at the Winter Paralympic Games since the Winter Games in 1988, in Innsbruck, Austria. Summary In the winter Paralympics where the sport was introduced, only athletes with physical impairments were allowed to compete. In the following Winter Paralympics in 1992, competitors expanded to include those with visual impairments. Biathlon at the 1992 Winter Olympics consisted of six biathlon events. They were held at Les Saisies, about 40 kilometres from the host city of Albertville. The events began on 11 February and ended on 20 February 1992. The 1992 Games were the first in which women competed in biathlon. Russian biathlete Sergei Tarasov admitted in 2015 that the EUN (former Soviet nations competing in a unified team) biathlon team had carried out illegal blood transfusions at the Games. Jouko Grip
Jouko Grip (born January 10, 1949, in Pälkäne) is a Paralympic athlete who has won medals in both the Summer and Winter Games. Most of his medals were in Nordic skiing. He is Finnish and has polio in his left hand. In 2006 he was inducted into the Paralympic Hall of Fame. He competed at the Summer Paralympics twice, in 1984 and 1988, and participated in track and field athletics both times, winning two gold medals in the 400 and 1500 metre races in 1984. He competed in seven consecutive Winter Paralympics, from 1980 to 2002, and won a total of ten gold and five silver medals.
