Bi'r Ali
Biʾr ʿAlī is a village in eastern Yemen. It is located in the Shabwah Governorate. The name means "Ali's Water well, Well" in Arabic. In pre-Islamic times, the port was called Qanīʾ (Qane, Cana, grc, Κάνη). Ancient history Literature In antiquity, Qanīʾ was mainly a trading port for spices from India and Eastern coast of Africa. Describing the part of his voyage after leaving the Red Sea and Aden, the author of the ''Periplus of the Erythraean Sea'' wrote in 50 CE: Archaeological finds Wine jars (amphorae) dating back to the 1st century CE were discovered in Biʾr ʿAlī in 1988, in an underwater excavation along the shores of the Indian Ocean. On one of the jars is inscribed a word in the Palmyrene alphabet, Palmyrene (Tadmori) alphabet and a word in Syriac alphabet, Syriac script. The conclusion drawn by researchers, B. Davidde and R. Petriaggi, is that from the mid-1st century CE wine was imported from Italy and Syria upon camels that disembarked from Coptos (Qif ... Governorates Of Yemen
Yemen is divided into twenty-one governorates (''muhafazah'') and one municipality ( amanah): Notes: a - Also known as Sanaa City b - Socatra Governorate was created in December 2013 from parts of Hadramaut, data included there The governorates are subdivided into 333 districts (''muderiah''), which are subdivided into 1,996 sub-districts, and then into 40,793 villages and 88,817 sub villages (as of 2013). Before 1990, Yemen existed as two separate entities. South Yemen consisted of modern Aden, Abyan, Al Mahrah, Dhale, Hadramaut, Socotra, Lahij, and Shabwah Governorates, while the rest made up North Yemen.
