Beyond The Walls (1984 Film)
''Beyond the Walls'' ( he, מאחורי הסורגים, ''MeAhorei HaSoragim'', lit. "Behind the Bars") is a 1984 Israeli film directed by Uri Barbash and written by his brother Benny Barbash and Eran Preis. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Plot The story takes place in the high-security block of the central Israel Prison Service jail. Uri and Issam are the leaders of the Israeli and Palestinian prisoner groups, respectively. After a musical performance in the prison, a row breaks out between Hoffman, a Jewish inmate, and a Palestinian. When Hoffman is killed, the security officer initiates a fight between the sides, pinning the blame for the murder on Issam's cell. Doron, the only Jewish prisoner in the Arab cell, is asked to sign a document implicating Issam in the crime, but refuses and commits suicide. Uri Barbash ( Hebrew: אורי ברבש; born 24 December 1946) is an Israeli film director. He directed the film "Beyond the Walls" (1984 film) written by his brother Benny Barbash and Eran Preis. the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film is about an overcrowded prison where Jewish and Arab inmates set aside their prejudices and unite in a daring escape plan. His film ''Echad Mishelanu'' (One of Us) (1989) is an Israeli drama about a military policeman sent to investigate his former comrades in an elite paratroop unit charged with the murder of an Arab who killed a member of the unit. Boaz Sharabi ( he, בעז שרעבי; born 28 May 1947) is an Israeli singer-songwriter, composer and lyricist, known for Israeli classics as ''Latet'', ''Halevai'', ''At Li Laila'', ''Pamela'', ''Lashir Itach'', ''Kol Od'', ''Mi Yada Shekach Yihiyeh'', ''K'Shetavo'' (written for Ron Arad), ''Im at Adain Ohevet Oti'' and ''Etzli Hakol Beseder''. Israel has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1964. Despite its relatively small film-making industry, ten Israeli films have been nominated for the Foreign Language Oscar, placing it in the Top Ten most nominated countries of all time. However, as of 2022, no Israeli film has ever won the coveted award. Since 1991, the Israeli Ophir Award winner for Best Film is automatically designated the Israeli submission for the Oscar. This is a list of submissions to the 57th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country.
