Beyond Our Control
''Beyond Our Control'' was an American youth-produced television series that aired on local NBC affiliate WNDU-TV in South Bend, Indiana for 19 seasons from 1967 to 1986. Usually televised from late-January to mid-May of each year, the program was produced by WJA-TV, a company that was part of the local Junior Achievement program, designed to give high school students business and work experience. WNDU-TV, owned and operated by the University of Notre Dame, was the local sponsor. Approximately 30 Michiana (Indiana and Michigan) high school students were selected by audition each year as company members. In 19 seasons, over 350 teenagers participated. As described by Jim Grey on ''Down the Road'', "it was a TV show about TV, and there was not a thing about the medium it did not lampoon and skewer. ... WNDU-TV (channel 16) is a television station in South Bend, Indiana, United States, affiliated with NBC. It is owned by Gray Television alongside Elkhart-licensed Heroes & Icons affiliate WSJV (channel 28). Both stations share studios on the campus of WNDU-TV's founding owner the University of Notre Dame along State Road 933 on South Bend's north side, while WNDU-TV's transmitter is located southeast of the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds on the city's south side. The station's studios also house production facilities for the syndicated agricultural news programs ''AgDay'' and '' U.S. Farm Report'', the former of which is broadcast locally by WNDU-TV; WNDU-TV's weather department provides the forecasts seen on those shows. Indiana University South Bend (IU South Bend) is a public university in South Bend, Indiana. It is the third largest and northernmost campus of Indiana University. History Indiana University began offering classes in South Bend in 1922 as an extension of the main campus of Indiana University Bloomington. In the Great Depression, the superintendent of South Bend schools asked that more classes be added for those who could not afford to attend classes at the Bloomington campus. The classes were offered at Central High School in downtown South Bend and within a few years enrollment reached 500. South Bend is a city in and the county seat of St. Joseph County, Indiana, on the St. Joseph River near its southernmost bend, from which it derives its name. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total of 103,453 residents and is the fourth-largest city in Indiana.
