Bevan Sharpless
Bevan Percival Sharpless (August 2, 1904 – October 28, 1950) was an American astronomer, best known for his 1944 discovery that the orbit of Phobos was decaying. Early life Sharpless was born to Ethel Mae Bevan and Albert Wayne Sharpless on August 2, 1904, in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania, the only child of the marriage. He attended Swarthmore High School then Swarthmore College, graduating in 1926 with an A.B. degree in mathematics. In 1923, he traveled with a group from the college to Yerbanis, Mexico to witness an eclipse of September 10, 1923, and again to New Haven, Connecticut, to observe the solar eclipse of January 24, 1925. He married Ethel May Gamble (1904-2002) on September 10, 1927, in Glenolden, Pennsylvania. Early career For two years after graduation, Sharpless worked as an actuary. Naval Air Station Richmond
The Naval Lighter Than Air Station Richmond was a South Florida military installation about south of Miami and west of US 1. It was an active air base during World War II. Since 1948, the University of Miami has used it as a research facility and storage area. History In September 15, 1942, the U.S. Navy purchased ; the base was used as a blimp base. Among the ten LTA bases across the nation, 17 large wooden hangars were built, of which Richmond NAS had more (3) than any other base. On September 15, 1945, a hurricane caused a fire in one of the hangars. The fire quickly spread to the two other hangars and destroyed the hangars, blimps, 366 planes and 150 cars. Emphysema
Emphysema, or pulmonary emphysema, is a lower respiratory tract disease, characterised by air-filled spaces ( pneumatoses) in the lungs, that can vary in size and may be very large. The spaces are caused by the breakdown of the walls of the alveoli and they replace the spongy lung parenchyma. This reduces the total alveolar surface available for gas exchange leading to a reduction in oxygen supply for the blood. Emphysema usually affects the middle aged or older population because it takes time to develop with the effects of tobacco smoking, and other risk factors. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a genetic risk factor that may lead to the condition presenting earlier. Orbital decay is a gradual decrease of the distance between two orbiting bodies at their closest approach (the periapsis) over many orbital periods. These orbiting bodies can be a planet and its satellite, a star and any object orbiting it, or components of any binary system. If left unchecked, the decay eventually results in termination of the orbit when the smaller object strikes the surface of the primary; or for objects where the primary has an atmosphere, the smaller object burns, explodes, or otherwise breaks up in the larger object's atmosphere; or for objects where the primary is a star, ends with incineration by the star's radiation (such as for comets).
