Betty Kiernan
Betty Margaret Kiernan (born 27 August 1955) is an Australian politician. Born in Mount Isa, Queensland, she was an electorate officer and corporate manager before entering politics, and had served on Cloncurry Shire Council from 1981 to 1990. A member of the Labor Party, she was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in 2006 as the member for Mount Isa. She lost her seat in the 2012 state election amid Labor's collapse that year, particularly in regional Queensland. Electoral District Of Mount Isa
Mount Isa was an electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in the state of Queensland, Australia from 1972 to 2017. It was located in the outback of the far west of the state and covered an area of 570,502 sq kilometres. As of the 2015 state election, it had 19,119 registered electors a decrease from 19,170 in 2009. The district took its name from the mining city of Mount Isa, which held the great majority of the electorate's population. Most of the electorate was virtually unpopulated. Following the implementation of one vote one value reforms in 1989, Mount Isa was one of five remote electorates that were allowed a greater variance from the average seat's population. The seat was held by the conservative parties for all but two terms in the first two decades of its existence, mostly coinciding with the height of National dominance. Katter's Australian Party (KAP) is an agrarian political party in Australia. It was founded by Bob Katter, an independent and former Nationals MP for the seat of Kennedy, with a registration application lodged to the Australian Electoral Commission in 2011. Katter has been re-elected under the party's label at the 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022 federal elections. The party also won two seats at the 2012 Queensland state election which it retained at the 2015 state election. The party won an additional seat at the 2017 state election which it retained at the 2020 state election. The Gulf Country is the region of woodland and savanna grassland surrounding the Gulf of Carpentaria in north western Queensland and eastern Northern Territory on the north coast of Australia. The Liberal National Party of Queensland (LNP) is a major political party in Queensland, Australia. It was formed in 2008 by a merger of the Queensland divisions of the Liberal Party and the National Party. At a federal level and in most other states, the two parties remain distinct and operate as a Coalition. The 2012 Queensland state election was held on 24 March 2012 to elect all 89 members of the Legislative Assembly, a unicameral parliament. The Labor Party (ALP), led by Premier Anna Bligh, was defeated by the opposition Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Campbell Newman. It is only the sixth time that Queenslanders have ousted a sitting government since 1915. The ALP was attempting to win a ninth consecutive election victory, having won every general election since 1989, despite being out of office between 1996 and 1998. Katter's Australian Party contested its first election. Before the election, it held two seats whose members had been elected as LNP candidates.
