Bethlehem University ( ar, جامعة بيت لحم) is a Catholic university in the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank, Palestine. It is the first university founded in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. History Established under Israeli Occupation in 1973, the university traces its roots to 1893 when the De La Salle Christian Brothers opened schools in Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Nazareth, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt and to 1964's Pope Paul VI's visit to the Holy Land in which he promised the Palestinian people a university, a centre for Ecumenical Studies (Tantur Ecumenical Institute) and a school for children with special educational needs (Effetá Paul VI School). Demographics The university consists mostly of Muslim students, but maintains a number of Christian students that is by far greater than the average Christian presence in Palestinian society. Bethlehem (; ar, بيت لحم ; he, בֵּית לֶחֶם ''Modern Hebrew phonology, '') is a city in the central West Bank, State of Palestine, Palestine, about south of Jerusalem. The economy is primarily Tourism in the Palestinian territories, tourist-driven, peaking during the Christmas season, when Christians make pilgrimage to the Church of the Nativity. The important holy site of Rachel's Tomb is at the northern entrance of Bethlehem, though not freely accessible to the city's own inhabitants and in general Palestinians living in the West Bank, Israeli-occupied West Bank due to the Israeli West Bank barrier.
