Description Bessemer Academy was established in 1969 as an all-White academy. It opened during the period of Desegregation in the United States, desegregation of public schools in the 1960s. According to the school, parents shared their desires for a school in Bessemer, "where children could receive a challenging curriculum within a framework of traditional values". Facilities built in 1972 include 18 classrooms, an activity room and dressing rooms, as well as administrative offices. Because a stream runs through campus, the school has implemented the ''Exploring Alabama’s Living Streams'' (EALS) curriculum. The Alabama Independent School Association is an organization of private schools in Alabama, formed in 1966 as the Alabama Private School Association. Originally a group of eight segregation academies, the membership grew to 60 by the 1971–72 school year. In 1990, the group voted to change its name to the Alabama Independent School Association. Segregation academies are private schools in the Southern United States that were founded in the mid-20th century by white parents to avoid having their children attend desegregated public schools. They were founded between 1954, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregated public schools were unconstitutional, and 1976, when the court ruled similarly about private schools.
