Bert Gallia
Melvin Allys "Bert" Gallia (October 14, 1891 – March 19, 1976) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1912 to 1920. He played for the Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, and Philadelphia Phillies. Gallia grew up in Woodsboro, Texas. As an 18-year-old student at St. Louis College (later St. Mary's University) in San Antonio in 1909, Gallia became famed for striking out Ty Cobb Tyrus Raymond Cobb (December 18, 1886 – July 17, 1961), nicknamed "the Georgia Peach", was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) center fielder. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. Beeville is a city in Bee County, Texas, United States, with a population of 12,863 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bee County and home to the main campus of Coastal Bend College.
