Berri Barmera Council is a local government area in the Riverland region of South Australia. It includes the towns of Barmera, Berri, Cobdogla, Glossop, Katarapko, Loveday and Winkie, and parts of Monash and Overland Corner. History The Berri Barmera Council was created on 1 October 1996 with the amalgamation of the District Council of Barmera and the District Council of Berri. The District Council of Berri had been created in 1922, 11 years after the town was proclaimed. Its first major project was to provide reliable electricity to the entire area. It bought the Berri Electric Supply Company in 1936 to facilitate this, and later sold it to the Electricity Trust of South Australia, a state government agency. Katarapko, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Katarapko is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Riverland about north-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about north of Loxton. Its boundaries were created in 1999 along with the selection of its name which was derived from Katarapko Island. Its extent includes all of Katarapko Island and some land located to the immediate west of the island. It is bounded on all sides by the following watercourses with exception to part of its western and northern sides - the Katarapko Creek and the Murray River. The southern boundary was revised in 2014 to "ensure the whole of Kapunda Island is within the rural locality of Loxton." The land within the locality is zoned for conservation with the locality being completely occupied by most of the Katarapko section of the Murray River National Park. Berri is a city in the Riverland region of South Australia. It is 238 kilometres north-east of Adelaide, the capital of the state of South Australia and a few kilometres west of the SA-Victoria border. It is primarily an agriculture, agricultural and viticulture, viticultural city on the north bank of the Murray River. It is the original home of a juice company, Berri Ltd. History The name "Berri" is from the local Australian Aboriginal, Aboriginal tribe, Meri, meaning "a wide bend in the river". The area was first explored by European settlers when Charles Sturt navigated the Murray River. Glossop, South Australia
Glossop is a small town in the Riverland region of South Australia. It was gazetted in 1921 as the town in a soldier settlement area after the First World War and was named after Admiral Glossop, who had been in command of when it sank in 1914. At the 2016 census, Glossop had a population of 984. Local area and surrounds Glossop has a population of around 984. Berri Estates, a large winery originally owned by a local co-operative but now owned by Constellation Brands, is located near the centre of Glossop. Overland Corner
Overland Corner is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the state’s east about north-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about west of the municipal seat in Berri. It is located on the Murray River in the Riverland area of South Australia, near Barmera and Cobdogla. The area had traditionally been used as an aboriginal camping ground and was then used by drovers taking stock from New South Wales to Adelaide. When the New South Wales gold rush began in 1851, Overland Corner developed as a point where timber was supplied to fuel paddle steamers taking prospectors up the Murray River. A small police post was established in Overland Corner in 1855, built by Edward Bate Scott. It closed in 1894. A school was opened and remained open until at least 1904. Monash is a town in the Riverland area of South Australia. It is on the Sturt Highway between Barmera and Renmark. At the 2006 census, Monash had a population of 1,115. Monash was proclaimed in 1921 and is named after General Sir John Monash, a World War I army commander. The primary industry is irrigated horticulture and viticulture. Monash is in the Berri Barmera Council, state electoral district of Chaffey, and federal Division of Barker. Its postcode is 5342. Settlement Land at Monash was allocated to repatriated soldiers returned from World War I as part of the State Government Soldier Settler Scheme. The southern part of the settlement was occupied first and was originally known as Lone Gum after a prominent local landmark, a River Red Gum tree ( Eucalyptus camaldulensis). Winkie is a locality in South Australia, around 11 km southwest of the Riverland town of Berri, and around the same distance southeast of Barmera. Loveday, South Australia
Loveday is a town and locality in the Riverland region of South Australia, located south of Barmera and near the Murray River. Administratively it is part of the Berri Barmera Council LGA. At the 2006 census, Loveday had a population of 1,071. History Located east of the Moorook Game Reserve, Loveday was known for its Internment Camp during World War II. The camp was established in 1941 and was one of the largest in Australia, covering approximately 180 hectares. Italian anti-fascist activist Francesco Fantin was killed there by a fellow internee. The camp was closed in December 1946. Cobdogla is a town in the Riverland region of South Australia, The town is on the Murray River, north-east of the state capital, Adelaide. At the 2006 census, Cobdogla had a population of 232.
