Bernie Wijesekara
Bernie Wijesekara (1930 – 1 October 2014) was a senior sports journalist in Sri Lanka. He received his secondary school education at Nalanda College in Colombo (largest city of Sri Lanka) before joining the ''Times of Ceylon'' as a junior sports journalist. Wijesekara then worked for the '' Daily News'' and subsequently for the ''Sunday Observer ''The Observer'' is a British newspaper published on Sundays. ''The Times of Ceylon'' was an English language daily newspaper in Sri Lanka published by Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL). It was founded in 1846 as the ''Ceylon Times'' and was published from Colombo. It ceased publication in 1985. History The ''Ceylon Times'' started on 11 July 1846 using the printing press of the defunct '' The Ceylon Herald''. The newspaper was established to oppose ''The Observer'' and promote the mercantile interests of British colonials. Initially it was published on Tuesdays and Fridays. In 1858 the paper's owners Wilson, Ritchie & Co. sold it to John Capper, a former sub-editor of '' The Globe''. Capper sold the paper to Alexander Allardyce in 1874 and returned to Britain. The ''Daily News'' is an English-language newspaper in Sri Lanka. It is now published by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House), a government-owned corporation. The newspaper commenced publishing on 3 January 1918. D. R. Wijewardena was its founder. The present-day newspaper is written as a broadsheet, with photographs printed both in color and black and white. Weekday printings include the main section, containing news on national affairs, international affairs, business, political analysis, sports, editorials and opinions.
